Chapter 9 - THE STORY VANESSA SOLD THE PUBLIC

Vanessa was released on bail after four days.

Her attorneys arranged a press conference outside the courthouse.

She wore a pale gray coat.

A bruise from Lucas’s slap remained visible beneath makeup.

“My fiancé attacked me during a painful family misunderstanding.”

She described Lily as emotionally disturbed.

She said the bathroom lock was a safety measure.

She claimed Margaret manipulated the child to stop the marriage.

The video of Lucas striking Vanessa spread online.

Millions watched the moment without seeing the locked door.

Commentators called him violent.

Unstable.

Unfit to lead.

Bennett Medical stock fell.

The board requested that Lucas step aside temporarily.

Adrian offered emergency financing.

The plan had changed.

The goal remained the same.

Lucas released a short statement.

“I struck Vanessa Prescott.”

“That action was wrong.”

“I have provided a complete statement and will accept legal review.”

“My use of force does not transform a locked bathroom, hidden confinement room, forged guardianship petition, or intercepted child into a misunderstanding.”

Then Margaret released the bathroom footage through a court filing.

Vanessa pushing Lily inside.

Taking the phone.

Demanding Claire’s letter.

Increasing the wedding music.

The public story shifted.

Not completely.

Some people insisted Lucas’s slap made both sides equal.

Dr. Reed explained the difference to him privately.

“People prefer symmetry.”

“It requires less thought.”

“What matters is whether you accept responsibility without allowing it to erase Lily’s experience.”

Lucas entered a no-contest plea to misdemeanor assault.

The judge ordered counseling and community service.

Vanessa called the plea proof that he was dangerous.

The same judge denied her request for custody contact with Lily.

Accountability did not produce the result Vanessa expected.

It made Lucas’s other statements more credible.

He did not deny evidence when it harmed him.

That separated him from the people who denied everything.
