Chapter 15 - LILY FINISHES HER STORY
Lily did not enter the courtroom.
She gave a recorded statement inside a child-advocacy center.
She wore a yellow sweater.
A small silver locket containing Claire’s photograph rested against her chest.
The interviewer began with simple questions.
Her age.
Her favorite book.
Her favorite dessert.
“Chocolate cake.”
Then the questions changed.
“What did Vanessa call the room behind your bookcase?”
“The thinking room.”
“What were you supposed to think about?”
“How to make her my real mother.”
“Was she kind to you?”
“When Dad watched.”
“What happened when he traveled?”
“She said the house belonged to her.”
“She took Mommy’s pictures.”
“She read my diary.”
“She locked the room.”
“Why didn’t you tell your father?”
Lily looked toward the floor.
“I tried.”
“What happened?”
“His assistant answered.”
“Vanessa listened.”
“She said Dad was too busy.”
The interviewer asked about the wedding morning.
Lily described finding Claire’s letter.
Calling Margaret.
Hiding the pages.
Vanessa discovering the empty envelope.
The bathroom.
The key.
“Were you trying to ruin the wedding?”
“No.”
“What were you trying to do?”
“Tell Dad before he signed the papers.”
“Did you think he would believe you?”
Lily paused.
“I didn’t know.”
Lucas watched from the courtroom.
The answer hurt more than anger.
The interviewer asked when Lily began trusting him again.
“When he let Margaret keep the trust papers.”
“When he didn’t make me go home.”
“When he asked before reading Mommy’s letter to me.”
“When he said he was sorry without asking me to say it was okay.”
The interviewer placed a photograph of the bathroom door on the table.
“What do you want adults to understand?”
Lily looked directly into the camera.
“If a child is ruining a perfect day by crying, maybe the day was not perfect.”
