Chapter 6 - THE ROOM BEHIND LILY’S BOOKCASE

Lily refused to sleep inside the mansion that night.

Lucas took her to Margaret’s home.

She chose the guest room nearest the stairs.

She placed a chair against the door.

Lucas wanted to move it.

A child therapist named Dr. Naomi Reed stopped him.

“The chair gives her control.”

“Let it remain.”

Lucas sat in the hallway until Lily fell asleep.

At three in the morning, she woke screaming.

Vanessa’s voice had followed her into the dream.

Your father chose me.

Your mother is dead.

Lucas waited until Lily opened the door.

He did not enter.

“Can I sit with you?”

She nodded.

He sat on the floor beside the bed.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Dr. Reed had warned him against that question.

Lucas corrected himself immediately.

“I’m sorry I made it hard for you to tell me.”

Lily looked at the chair.

“She checked my phone.”

“What else did she do?”

“She read my diary.”

“She took Mommy’s letters.”

“She made me sleep in the small room.”

Lucas went still.

“What small room?”

“Behind my bookcase.”

Police returned to the mansion the next morning.

The bookcase in Lily’s bedroom had been bolted to a concealed sliding track.

Behind it was a narrow storage room.

The interior handle had been removed.

A mattress lay on the floor.

A plastic cup sat beside it.

Marks had been drawn along the wall in purple crayon.

Groups of five.

Lucas counted sixty-seven lines.

He stopped when his vision blurred.

The room contained a speaker connected to Vanessa’s phone.

She could speak without opening the door.

Recovered audio showed her questioning Lily.

“Why did you hide the bracelet?”

“I didn’t.”

“Why did you call Margaret?”

“I miss Mommy.”

“Your father does not want that woman involved.”

“Yes, he does.”

“You will stay until your memory improves.”

The hidden room had been created during the same renovation that sealed the bathroom window.

Invoices described it as climate-controlled document storage.

Lucas’s electronic signature approved the work.

He had never signed.

His executive assistant, Patrick Sloan, controlled the digital system.

Patrick also scheduled Lucas’s trips.

Blocked calls during meetings.

Removed Margaret from the visitor list.

And delivered the guardianship papers.

Police contacted him.

He disappeared before they reached his apartment.

Inside Lily’s room, officers found more than locks.

The smoke detector contained a microphone.

The lamp contained another camera.

Vanessa had been watching Lily constantly.

Every time she whispered to Claire’s photograph.

Every time she rehearsed telling Lucas the truth.

Every time she cried.

Lucas stood inside the narrow room.

“I lived down the hallway.”

Margaret did not soften her response.

“Yes.”

“I should have known.”

“You should have asked why your daughter stopped entering rooms before Vanessa.”

He looked at her.

The truth hurt because it was accurate.

Lily had become quieter.

Lucas called it grief.

She stopped asking him to read at night.

He called it growing up.

She began checking locks.

He called it anxiety.

He accepted every explanation Vanessa offered because the explanations allowed him to keep working.

Vanessa had created the hidden room.

Lucas’s absence gave her time to use it.
