Chapter 16 - VANESSA EXPLAINS HERSELF
Vanessa took the stand against her attorneys’ advice.
She wore a cream suit.
Her voice remained controlled.
She described meeting a grieving widower.
Entering a mansion filled with Claire’s memory.
Trying to create a future.
She said Lily rejected every attempt at love.
The prosecutor approached.
“Did love require a locked bathroom?”
“She was hysterical.”
“Did love require a hidden room?”
“She needed boundaries.”
“Did love require intercepted calls?”
“Lucas needed to work.”
“Did love require a forged guardianship petition?”
Vanessa’s composure cracked.
“The company was at risk.”
“From whom?”
“From Claire’s trust.”
The courtroom became silent.
The prosecutor continued.
“Claire’s trust belonged to Lily.”
“It controlled too much.”
“For whom?”
“My father believed the merger would protect thousands of jobs.”
“Did Lily agree?”
“She was a child.”
“Exactly.”
The prosecutor displayed the transport contract.
“Would Lily have been taken during the wedding reception?”
“Yes.”
“Would Lucas have known?”
“Eventually.”
“Would he have consented?”
“He would have understood after seeing the behavioral evidence.”
“The evidence you manufactured?”
Vanessa looked toward Lucas.
“He was weak after Claire.”
“He needed someone to make decisions.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Did you love him?”
“Yes.”
“Did you love Lily?”
Vanessa said nothing.
“Did you ever want to?”
“I wanted her to stop controlling him.”
The truth entered the room without disguise.
Lily’s grief reminded Lucas of Claire.
Vanessa experienced that memory as competition.
