Patrick Sloan surrendered two days later.
He had worked for Lucas for seven years.
He knew every flight.
Every board meeting.
Every private call.
Every moment Lucas could not be reached.
Vanessa first asked him to manage household interruptions.
Then Adrian Prescott paid his debts.
The requests became more serious.
Delete Margaret’s messages.
Redirect Caroline Hayes.
Create travel emergencies.
Authorize renovations.
Copy Lucas’s electronic signature.
Patrick admitted scheduling a false investor crisis on the week of the wedding.
Lucas was supposed to remain in Boston until the morning of the ceremony.
Vanessa wanted no private time between father and daughter.
Patrick intercepted six calls from Lily during the previous month.
“What did she say?” Lucas asked.
Patrick stared at the table.
“She asked whether you still wanted to marry Vanessa.”
“What did you tell her?”
“That you were busy.”
Busy.
The word struck Lucas harder than an insult.
Busy sounded responsible.
Busy made abandonment look temporary.
Busy had become the locked door between him and his daughter.
Patrick provided investigators with messages from Vanessa.
Keep Lucas away from Lily until after the trust signatures.
If the child becomes emotional, describe it as grief regression.
No private calls.
No unscheduled contact with Margaret Hale.
Another message concerned the wedding.
Bathroom until ceremony ends.
Then move her through the service garage.
Dr. Ward will handle the transfer.
Lily had not merely been locked away to miss the wedding.
A private transport team was scheduled to take her to Prescott House, a residential treatment center owned by Adrian’s foundation.
The van would arrive during the reception.
Vanessa planned to tell Lucas that Lily ran away.
After several hours of panic, Dr. Ward would reveal that Lily had voluntarily contacted the center.
The false statement carrying Lily’s scanned signature would support the story.
The center’s contract authorized physical restraint.
The annual fee was three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Paid from Lily’s trust.
The institution would earn money from her confinement.
Adrian would gain control over her shares.
Patrick looked at Lucas.
“I didn’t think they would hurt her.”
“You removed her calls.”
“I believed Vanessa was creating structure.”
“You saw the locked-room invoice.”
“She called it therapy.”
“Did you ask Lily?”
“No.”
