Chapter 2 - CLAIRE’S FINAL WARNING
Lucas carried Lily into the mansion library.
Margaret followed.
Vanessa attempted to enter behind them.
Lucas blocked the doorway.
“You stay outside.”
“This concerns me.”
“It concerns the child you locked inside a bathroom.”
“She was trying to ruin our wedding.”
Lucas stared at her.
“She is nine years old.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“She knows exactly how to manipulate you.”
Lily flinched at the sound of her voice.
Lucas closed the library door.
For the first time that morning, the mansion became quiet.
Margaret placed Claire’s envelope on the desk.
The paper had yellowed at the edges.
Lucas recognized his late wife’s handwriting immediately.
For Lucas, if Lily ever says she is afraid.
His hands began to shake.
“When did Claire write this?”
“Six weeks before she died,” Margaret answered.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?”
“I tried.”
“You returned every letter.”
“I never received them.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
“I sent four.”
“Vanessa’s assistant signed for the last one.”
Lucas looked toward the closed door.
Vanessa had moved into the estate eighteen months after Claire’s death.
She initially arrived as a consultant hired to organize a charity foundation.
Within months, she controlled the household calendar, the staff, and every invitation.
Lucas had called it efficiency.
Margaret opened the envelope.
Inside were three pages and a small silver key.
Claire’s letter began with love.
She wrote about Lily’s kindness.
Her fear of thunderstorms.
Her habit of hiding notes inside library books.
Then the tone changed.
Lucas, there are people asking questions about Lily’s trust.
They are especially interested in the Bennett voting shares she will inherit.
Do not allow anyone to convince you that protecting Lily requires separating her from you.
Lucas looked up.
“What voting shares?”
Margaret answered carefully.
“Claire owned twenty-six percent of Bennett Medical Systems.”
“She placed them in trust for Lily.”
“I thought Claire’s shares returned to the company.”
“That was the public structure.”
“The protected shares remained with Lily.”
Lucas gripped the edge of the desk.
Bennett Medical Systems was the company his father created.
Lucas served as chief executive.
Twenty-six percent was enough to block a merger or remove senior directors when combined with Lucas’s holdings.
“Who controls the shares now?”
“You do.”
“Until Lily turns eighteen.”
Margaret pointed toward the next paragraph.
If Lucas remarries and becomes incapacitated, Lily’s guardian may petition for temporary control.
Vanessa wanted to become Lily’s legal guardian.
The papers were scheduled to be signed after the ceremony.
Lucas remembered the packet his attorney planned to deliver during the reception.
Vanessa described it as routine estate planning.
Lily touched the silver key.
“What does this open?”
Margaret looked toward Claire’s old writing desk.
“A hidden compartment.”
Vanessa had tried to force Lily to reveal where the letter was found.
Lily refused.
That was why she had been locked away before the ceremony.
Margaret continued reading.
I have discovered irregular transfers involving the Prescott Foundation.
If anything happens to me, do not trust Adrian Prescott or anyone acting for his family.
Lucas felt cold.
Adrian Prescott was Vanessa’s father.
He was also chairman of the investment firm currently negotiating a merger with Bennett Medical Systems.
Lucas looked toward Lily.
“What did Vanessa say about this letter?”
“She said Mommy was sick when she wrote it.”
“She said the wedding would make us a real family.”
“She said there was no place for a dead woman’s rules.”
A knock struck the library door.
Vanessa’s voice came through the wood.
“Lucas, our guests are waiting.”
He looked at Claire’s letter.
Then at the child still clinging to his arm.
