Chapter 19 - THE LETTER LILY FINALLY READ
Five years after the wedding, Lily asked to read Claire’s entire letter.
She was fourteen.
Lucas sat beside her at the kitchen table.
Margaret waited in the next room.
“You don’t have to finish it today,” Lucas said.
“I know.”
“You can stop.”
“I know.”
She opened the envelope.
Claire’s words were loving and frightened.
She described Lily’s laugh.
Her stubbornness.
Her kindness to injured birds.
Then she described Adrian’s transfers.
The trust.
The danger of isolation.
Lily read the final page twice.
She looked at Lucas.
“Mom knew someone might try this?”
“She knew powerful people were asking questions.”
“Did you believe her?”
“I never read it.”
“Would you have?”
Lucas answered honestly.
“I don’t know.”
The answer hurt.
It was also real.
Lily folded the pages.
“I used to think you picked Vanessa because I wasn’t enough.”
Lucas’s eyes filled with tears.
“You were always enough.”
“But you didn’t see me.”
“No.”
“I didn’t see enough.”
She looked toward Claire’s photograph.
“Do you still love Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Did you love Vanessa?”
“I loved who I believed she was.”
“Can both be true?”
“Yes.”
“Does that mean love is dangerous?”
Lucas thought carefully.
“Love without questions can be.”
“Love that requires silence is.”
“Love that removes every other person from your life is.”
Lily nodded.
She placed the letter back inside the envelope.
“I don’t want to keep it hidden anymore.”
The foundation displayed a digital copy in its legal-education archive.
The original remained with Lily.
