Chapter 1 - THE KEY IN VANESSA’S HAND

Lucas Bennett stared at the brass key clenched inside Vanessa’s fist.
Behind the locked bathroom door, Lily continued sobbing.
“Daddy, please hurry.”
“I’m scared.”
Lucas stepped toward his bride.
“Open the door.”
Vanessa’s white wedding gown shimmered beneath the chandelier light.
Her expression remained carefully wounded.
“She locked herself in there.”
Lucas pointed toward her hand.
“Then why do you have the key?”
Vanessa looked down as though she had forgotten she was holding it.
For one dangerous second, her calm mask disappeared.
Then she forced a laugh.
“I found it on the floor.”
The woman standing at the top of the staircase spoke before Lucas could answer.
“No, you didn’t.”
Every guest turned.
Margaret Hale descended the stairs slowly.
She wore a dark blue suit and held an old cream-colored envelope against her chest.
Lucas had not seen her in almost three years.
Margaret had been Claire’s closest friend.
She had also served as the attorney who prepared Claire’s final estate documents before cancer took her life.
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“You were not invited.”
Margaret continued walking.
“I was invited by Lily.”
Lucas looked toward the bathroom door.
“How?”
Margaret held up the envelope.
“Your daughter found this inside Claire’s old writing desk.”
“She called me yesterday.”
Vanessa stepped between Margaret and the door.
“This woman has been harassing our family for years.”
Margaret looked at Lucas.
“Ask your fiancée why she took Lily’s phone.”
Lucas turned toward Vanessa.
“Where is her phone?”
“She lost it.”
Margaret opened her handbag.
She removed a pink phone with a cracked case.
“I found it inside Vanessa’s dressing-room drawer.”
The corridor filled with whispers.
Lucas’s face became hard.
“Give me the key.”
Vanessa tightened her grip.
“Lucas, the ceremony is waiting.”
“Two hundred people are downstairs.”
“Our photographers are here.”
“The governor’s wife is sitting in the front row.”
Lucas moved closer.
“My daughter is crying behind a locked door.”
“There is no ceremony until she is out.”
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“If you open that door now, she will destroy everything.”
Lucas stared at her.
“What did you do?”
Vanessa looked toward Margaret.
Then toward the guests watching from the ballroom entrance.
She understood that her private explanation was disappearing.
Lucas reached for the key.
Vanessa pulled her hand away.
Margaret spoke quietly.
“Claire’s letter explains what Vanessa planned to do after the wedding.”
Lucas stopped.
“What letter?”
The bathroom door shook as Lily struck it from the inside.
“She wanted me to burn it.”
“She said Mommy was a liar.”
Vanessa spun toward the door.
“Lily, be quiet.”
Lucas’s expression changed instantly.
He grabbed Vanessa’s wrist.
The key fell onto the carpet.
Margaret picked it up.
Lucas released Vanessa and took the key from her.
He unlocked the bathroom.
The moment the door opened, Lily ran into him.
She wore a pale pink flower-girl dress.
The fabric was torn near one shoulder.
Her cheeks were wet with tears.
A red mark crossed her wrist.
Lucas dropped to his knees.
“What happened?”
Lily wrapped both arms around his neck.
“She said if I told you about Mommy’s letter, you would send me away.”
Lucas lifted his head.
Vanessa stood several feet away.
The wedding guests watched in complete silence.
Margaret held out the envelope.

“Claire wrote this before she died.”
“And Vanessa has spent months making sure you never read it.”
