Chapter 5 - THE CEREMONY BECOMES A CRIME SCENE

Police arrived while the string quartet remained seated beneath the ballroom windows.

Guests crowded the mansion foyer.

Some whispered.

Others filmed.

The wedding cake stood untouched beside a gold-framed photograph of Lucas and Vanessa.

Detective Sarah Collins entered the library with two officers.

She listened without reacting.

Then she asked to see the bathroom.

The lock could be operated only from the hallway.

There was no telephone inside.

The bathroom window had been sealed as part of a recent renovation.

A small camera was hidden inside the ventilation grille.

Lucas felt sick.

“Why was there a camera?”

Vanessa answered quickly.

“For security.”

“In a child’s bathroom?”

“It monitored the hallway.”

The camera faced the bathtub.

Detective Collins removed the memory unit.

The latest recording showed Vanessa pushing Lily inside.

Lily struggled.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“You are staying here until the ceremony ends.”

“Give me the letter.”

“No.”

“Your father chose me.”

“Your mother is dead.”

Vanessa locked the door.

Then she stood outside and adjusted her veil.

The recording captured every word.

No misunderstanding remained.

The ballroom guests were asked to stay for statements.

Vanessa’s bridesmaids appeared shocked.

Two had helped search for Lily earlier.

Vanessa told them the child was hiding to ruin the photographs.

A wedding planner admitted Vanessa ordered the music volume increased when Lily began pounding on the bathroom door.

One server heard crying.

She told Vanessa.

Vanessa said the sound came from old plumbing.

The orchestra had continued playing.

The ceremony had been designed to cover Lily’s voice.

Detective Collins searched Vanessa’s suite.

Inside a locked suitcase, officers found Lily’s phone, Claire’s missing journals, and three draft guardianship petitions.

One petition stated Lily had threatened self-harm.

Another accused Lucas of emotional neglect.

The final version named Vanessa emergency guardian if Lucas suffered a “public psychological collapse.”

The wedding was supposed to create that collapse.

Adrian’s media team had prepared cameras outside.

If Lucas panicked after Lily’s staged disappearance, they would record him.

Dr. Ward would certify acute instability.

Vanessa would become temporary guardian.

Adrian would control Lily’s shares.

Everything had a schedule.

The ceremony.

The disappearance.

The medical evaluation.

The board vote.

The merger.

Lily’s fear had been turned into a corporate calendar.

Detective Collins placed Vanessa under arrest for unlawful imprisonment, child endangerment, and evidence tampering.

Vanessa looked at Lucas.

“You slapped me in front of witnesses.”

Lucas’s hand had struck her when he discovered the open bathroom.

The guests had seen it.

The cameras had recorded it.

“I did,” he said.

“You assaulted me.”

“Yes.”

Detective Collins looked at him.

“You will need to give a formal statement.”

“I will.”

Vanessa smiled through her tears.

“You see?”

“He is unstable.”

Lucas looked toward Lily.

“No.”

“I used force when I should have stepped away.”

“I will answer for that.”

May you like

“But accountability for what I did will not erase what you did to my daughter.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
