Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT SOMEONE CAME FOR LILY
Lily stayed with Margaret while Lucas moved into a nearby apartment.
He did not ask her to return to the mansion.
The house no longer felt safe.
A week after the board meeting, a woman wearing medical scrubs arrived at Lily’s school.
She carried transfer papers.
The documents ordered Lily’s release to Prescott House.
Lucas’s signature appeared at the bottom.
The school administrator noticed the court’s protective alert.
She called Margaret.
The woman tried to leave.
Police stopped her in the parking lot.
Inside her vehicle were restraints, sedatives, and a bag of Lily’s clothes taken from the mansion.
The transfer order had been signed by Dr. Ward.
Vanessa called the woman from a private detention phone.
The conversation was recorded.
Get the child before the trust court freezes everything.
Once she enters the center, we control the evaluation.
Vanessa’s bail was revoked.
Dr. Ward was arrested.
The attempted abduction changed Lily’s case from a family dispute into an active conspiracy.
Lucas arrived at Margaret’s home after the school released Lily.
He stopped outside the living-room door.
“Can I come in?”
Lily nodded.
He sat across from her.
“I’m sorry.”
She looked at the floor.
“Are you going to say you will never let anything bad happen?”
Lucas remembered the promises he used after Claire died.
Nothing will hurt you.
I will always know.
You are safe now.
Promises that felt loving to an adult could sound false to a child who had already been locked away.
“No,” he said.
“I cannot promise nothing bad will happen.”
“I can promise you will have more than one person to call.”
“You will know where I am.”
“No one will control all your messages.”
“And when you say you are afraid, we will listen before asking the person who scares you.”
Lily studied him.
“That sounds better.”
