Chapter 3 - THE BRIDE WHO REFUSED TO LEAVE
Vanessa entered the library without permission.
Her veil trailed behind her across the carpet.
“You are not canceling our wedding because a frightened child misunderstood discipline.”
Lucas stood.
“She did not misunderstand a locked door.”
Vanessa turned toward Margaret.
“You planted that letter.”
Margaret did not move.
“Claire’s handwriting has been authenticated.”
“The envelope remained sealed until this morning.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Of course you would say that.”
“You hated me from the beginning.”
“I did not know you from the beginning.”
“I began questioning you after the household staff stopped speaking freely.”
Lucas looked toward Margaret.
“What does that mean?”
“The nanny who raised Lily was fired.”
“Her teacher was replaced.”
“Claire’s sister was removed from the visitor list.”
“Lily’s pediatrician received a notice saying you wanted no direct communication.”
“I approved those changes,” Lucas said.
“No.”
“Vanessa placed electronic approvals beneath scheduling documents.”
Vanessa’s composure cracked.
“Those changes were necessary.”
“Grace encouraged Lily’s attachment problems.”
“Her teacher fed her fantasies.”
“Claire’s sister insulted me inside my own home.”
Lucas moved closer.
“This is not your home anymore.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“We are minutes from becoming husband and wife.”
“No.”
“We were minutes from me signing away control of my daughter’s trust.”
Her face changed.
Only for a moment.
Then she began crying.
“You think I wanted your money?”
“I gave up everything for this family.”
Margaret opened another document.
Vanessa had not given up everything.
She owned a luxury apartment downtown.
The property had been purchased by the Prescott Foundation.
Monthly payments from Bennett Medical Systems covered its expenses under a consulting contract.
The consultant was a shell company belonging to Vanessa.
Lucas looked at the transfers.
“You have been taking money from my company?”
“They were legitimate planning fees.”
“For what work?”
“The merger.”
“Your father’s merger.”
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Lucas, listen to me.”
“Your company needs Prescott capital.”
“Without my father’s financing, two major divisions will collapse.”
“That is what he told me.”
“It is true.”
Margaret shook her head.
“It isn’t.”
She produced an independent valuation.
Bennett Medical Systems remained profitable.
The supposed crisis had been created through delayed vendor payments and false liability reports.
The reports came from Prescott auditors.
The merger would transfer operational control to Adrian Prescott.
Lily’s shares were the final obstacle.
If Vanessa became guardian, she could petition to vote them.
Lucas looked toward the wedding papers waiting downstairs.
“This ceremony was a corporate transaction.”
Vanessa’s tears stopped.
“You needed us.”
“You were drowning after Claire died.”
“You ignored Lily.”
“You lived inside that company.”
“I built order from the ruins.”
Lily whispered:
“You put Mommy’s pictures in boxes.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Because your father needed to move forward.”
Lucas stepped between them.
“You do not speak to her.”
Vanessa’s voice became cold.
“She will destroy every woman you bring into this house.”
“No.”
“You tried to erase her mother and take control of her future.”
“You destroyed this.”
The library door opened.
Adrian Prescott stood in the hallway beside two attorneys.
His expression remained perfectly calm.
“Lucas, this situation can still be managed.”
Lucas looked at him.
“My daughter was locked inside a bathroom.”
Adrian glanced toward Lily.
“Children create scenes when families change.”
Margaret placed Claire’s letter on the desk.
