CHAPTER 9 The Family Member Who Was Never Supposed to Return

The photograph stayed on my phone screen for almost a minute.
I didn’t blink.
I didn’t breathe normally.
Because my mind was fighting against something impossible.
My brother was dead.
Alexander Sterling had been dead for eight years.
I had stood beside his coffin.
I had watched the funeral workers lower him into the ground.
I had signed the documents.
I had mourned him.
So how was he standing beside Thomas Vale?
Alive.
Older.
Hidden.
Planning something.
My entire understanding of my own family began collapsing.
“Daniel.”
“Yes, sir?”
“Where did you get this?”
“A private security camera outside a warehouse downtown.”
“Who owns the warehouse?”
A pause.
“That’s the problem.”
“What?”
“It belongs to a company called Sterling Holdings.”
I felt a cold wave move through me.
My company.
A property I inherited after my father died.
A property I rarely visited.
“Who has access?”
Daniel answered quietly.
“Your brother.”
I closed my eyes.
Impossible.
But the evidence kept appearing.
One impossible thing after another.
I drove to the warehouse myself.
I didn’t tell Eleanor.
I didn’t tell anyone.
Trust had become a luxury I could no longer afford.
When I arrived, Daniel was already waiting.
The building looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Old loading doors.
No signs of activity.
But Daniel pointed toward the side entrance.
“Someone has been using this place.”
“How do you know?”
“Fresh tire marks.”
We entered carefully.
Inside, the warehouse was darker than expected.
But it wasn’t empty.
There were computers.
Files.
Documents.
A small office had been built in the corner.
And on the wall…
photographs.
Again.
Photographs of my family.
Maya.
Sarah.
Me.
Eleanor.
But this time, there were older pictures.
Pictures from before I met Eleanor.
Before Sarah died.
Before everything changed.
Daniel picked up a folder.
“Sir.”
I turned.
He looked disturbed.
“What?”
He handed me the folder.
The title was written on the front.
STERLING FAMILY SUCCESSION PLAN.
I opened it.
The first page was my father’s will.
The second page was something I had never seen.
A private amendment.
Signed six months before his death.
My eyes scanned the document.
Then stopped.
A clause.
A hidden clause.
"If Richard Sterling becomes sole heir, his daughter Maya Sterling will inherit controlling interest upon reaching adulthood."
I looked at Daniel.
“Maya.”
He nodded.
“She was always the target.”
The truth hit me harder than I expected.
It wasn’t about Eleanor wanting my attention.
It wasn’t about replacing Sarah.
It wasn’t even about destroying my marriage.
It was about money.
Power.
Control.
Maya was the obstacle.
A nine-year-old girl stood between someone and billions of dollars.
And suddenly every cruel thing made sense.
The isolation.
The fear.
The attempts to make her feel unwanted.
If Maya believed she didn’t belong…
maybe she would never claim what was hers.
A sound came from behind us.
Footsteps.
Daniel immediately turned.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
A voice I knew.
A voice I never thought I would hear again.
“Richard.”
My body froze.
The man stepped into the light.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Alexander.
My brother.
Alive.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then I whispered:
“You’re dead.”
He looked at me sadly.
“I know.”
Anger replaced shock.
“What kind of game are you playing?”
“It’s not a game.”
“You let me bury you.”
“I had no choice.”
“No choice?”
I stepped forward.
“You disappeared.”
“Yes.”
“You let everyone believe you were dead.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
He looked at the photographs on the wall.
“Because our family was never as clean as you thought.”
I laughed bitterly.
“My daughter was locked in a pantry.”
“I know.”
“You knew?”
His face changed.
Regret.
Real regret.
“I tried to stop it.”
“You tried?”
My voice rose.
“You were watching?”
“Yes.”
The answer made me furious.
“You watched my daughter suffer?”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I was trying to gather proof.”
“While she was afraid?”
“I didn’t know it had become that bad.”
I stared at him.
“How convenient.”
He accepted the accusation.
“I deserve that.”
Daniel stepped between us.
“Richard, we need answers.”
Alexander nodded.
“You do.”
“Start talking.”
Alexander looked toward the ceiling.
Then said:
“Thomas Vale has been manipulating this family for years.”
“How?”
“He finds vulnerable people.”
“Eleanor.”
“Yes.”
“He convinced her that she deserved more. That Sarah was the reason she would never be accepted.”
“And then?”
“He convinced me that Richard was destroying the family business.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“He told me you were too emotional after Sarah’s death. That you were making decisions based on grief.”
I stared at him.
“And you believed him?”
“I almost did.”
“Almost?”
Alexander looked at the floor.
“Until I discovered he was creating the conflict himself.”
I stepped closer.
“What happened eight years ago?”
Alexander’s expression changed.
“The night everyone thought I died…”
He stopped.
“That was the night I discovered Thomas had been stealing from Sterling Holdings.”
My eyes narrowed.
“You confronted him.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“He tried to kill me.”
The warehouse went silent.
“What?”
“He staged the accident.”
My breathing stopped.
“The car crash?”
Alexander nodded.
“He wanted everyone to believe I was gone.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew too much.”
Before I could ask more, a noise came from one of the computers.
A notification.
Someone had accessed the system remotely.
Daniel rushed over.
“Someone knows we’re here.”
Alexander’s face changed.
“Impossible.”
“What?”
“Only one person knew about this location.”
“Who?”
Alexander slowly looked at me.
His answer was quiet.
“Someone you trust.”
The computer screen turned on.
A message appeared.
Three words.
"You found him."
Then another line appeared.
"Now ask him what he did to Sarah."
I turned toward Alexander.
My brother looked away.
And that was when I realized…
May you like
The biggest secret in my family might not belong to Eleanor.
It might belong to the person standing right in front of me.
