CHAPTER 11 The Shadow Standing Outside My Daughter’s Window

For one second, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Eleanor.

Not Maya.

The entire world seemed to freeze around that single image.

A man standing in my garden.

Outside my daughter’s bedroom window.

Watching.

Thomas Vale.

And beside him…

someone wearing the Sterling family ring.

The same ring my father had worn.

The same ring my brother Alexander had worn.

The same ring only members of my family were supposed to own.

My first instinct was anger.

My second was fear.

Not for myself.

For Maya.

I moved immediately.

I stepped in front of her.

Blocking her view.

“Stay behind me.”

My voice was calm.

But inside, everything was breaking apart.

Maya grabbed my shirt.

“Daddy…”

“I’m here.”

“Is he coming inside?”

I looked at the window.

“No.”

I didn’t know if that was true.

But she needed to hear it.

“No one is coming near you.”

Daniel arrived less than five minutes later with security.

But by the time they reached the garden…

Thomas was gone.

The person beside him was gone.

No footprints.

No vehicle.

No evidence.

Only one thing remained.

A small envelope placed beneath Maya’s window.

Daniel picked it up carefully.

“Sir.”

“Don’t open it.”

He looked at me.

“Why?”

“Because whoever left it wanted us to find it.”

I took a pair of gloves.

Then opened it myself.

Inside was a photograph.

An old photograph.

My hands went cold.

Because I recognized it immediately.

It was taken twenty years earlier.

My father.

My mother.

Alexander.

Me.

And…

Thomas Vale.

Standing beside our family.

A person who was never supposed to be there.

On the back of the photograph were six words.

"You never knew the whole family."

I spent the rest of the night in my office.

Every piece of information sat in front of me.

Sarah’s notebook.

The hidden files.

Thomas’s reports.

The photograph.

The letter.

The impossible truth.

Thomas Vale had not entered our lives recently.

He had been connected to us for decades.

But how?

And why?

At 4:00 in the morning, Alexander came to the estate.

I was waiting.

He looked at the photograph.

Then immediately became pale.

“You know him.”

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.”

“Who is he?”

Alexander remained silent.

“Alexander.”

He sat down.

“When we were children, Thomas was around our family often.”

“Why?”

“Our father trusted him.”

I frowned.

“My father never mentioned him.”

“Because he wasn't family.”

“Then what was he?”

Alexander looked at the photograph.

“A friend.”

“Just a friend?”

“No.”

The hesitation bothered me.

“What are you hiding?”

Alexander took a deep breath.

“Thomas was my father’s secret advisor.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He helped manage private investments.”

“Why would Dad hide that?”

“Because Thomas knew things about our family that nobody else knew.”

“Like what?”

Alexander looked at me.

“Our father had another child.”

Silence.

The room went completely silent.

“What did you say?”

Alexander looked at me.

“Before our father married our mother, he had another relationship.”

My mind struggled to process it.

“You’re saying Thomas is…”

“No.”

Alexander shook his head.

“Not Thomas.”

“Then who?”

He looked at the photograph.

“The person standing beside him.”

My heart started pounding.

The person in the garden.

The person wearing the Sterling ring.

A family member.

Someone with a blood connection.

“Who is it?”

Alexander didn’t answer.

Instead, he opened his phone.

He showed me an old newspaper article.

A headline from twenty-five years ago.

"Local Woman Disappears After Mysterious Dispute With Sterling Family."

Below the headline was a photograph.

A young woman.

Holding a baby.

I looked closer.

Then my entire body went cold.

Because I recognized the baby.

Not because I had seen him as a child.

Because I had seen him recently.

In the garden.

Standing beside Thomas.

“Who is that?” I whispered.

Alexander answered:

“His name is Lucas.”

“Lucas who?”

Alexander looked at me.

“Lucas Sterling.”

The name echoed in my mind.

Another Sterling.

Another secret.

Another person who had a reason to hate my family.

“Why was he hidden?”

Alexander’s voice became quiet.

“Because our father believed his existence could destroy the inheritance.”

I looked toward the stairs.

Where Maya slept.

“So this is about money.”

“Yes.”

“And Maya.”

“Yes.”

A thought suddenly entered my mind.

“If Lucas is the person behind this…”

Alexander interrupted.

“He isn't.”

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because Lucas disappeared years ago.”

“Then who was in the garden?”

Alexander looked at the photograph again.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because if Lucas is alive…”

He paused.

“Then someone else is pretending to be him.”

Before I could ask more, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

No greeting.

No introduction.

Just a voice.

A woman’s voice.

“Richard.”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Vanessa.

Eleanor’s friend.

The woman who had laughed at my dinner table.

The woman who had defended Eleanor.

The woman who had been standing beside Thomas in the photograph.

“What do you want?”

Her voice was shaking.

“I need to talk to you.”

“Why?”

“Because I know what happened to Sarah.”

My grip tightened.

“Where are you?”

A pause.

Then she whispered:

“Not somewhere safe.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Thomas knows I betrayed him.”

I stood.

“Betrayed him?”

“Yes.”

“Vanessa…”

Her next words stopped me.

“I was the person who helped Eleanor.”

My blood ran cold.

“But I was also the person who tried to save Maya.”

The call suddenly cut off.

I immediately called back.

No answer.

Daniel checked the signal.

Then his face changed.

“Sir.”

“What?”

“The phone location.”

“Where?”

He looked at me.

“Near the old Sterling family cemetery.”

My heart sank.

The cemetery.

Where Sarah was buried.

I grabbed my coat.

And before leaving, I looked toward Maya’s room.

My daughter was asleep.

For the first time in days, she looked peaceful.

I whispered:

“Daddy will find the truth.”

Then I walked out.

Because somewhere near Sarah’s grave…

May you like

a woman who knew the truth was waiting.

And she might be the only person alive who could tell me what really happened six years ago.
