CHAPTER 14 The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

The voice came from behind us.

Calm.

Controlled.

Familiar.

A voice I had heard before.

But not in years.

Not since a funeral.

Not since I watched a coffin lowered into the ground.

Everyone turned.

Even Thomas.

Even Eleanor.

Even Alexander, who had been standing near the doorway.

The man stepped into the room.

The rain behind him created a dark silhouette.

Then lightning flashed.

And I saw his face.

My body went completely still.

Because there was no mistake.

No illusion.

No trick.

It was him.

My father.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Nobody could.

Because my father was supposed to be dead.

He had died fifteen years ago.

A heart attack.

A closed casket funeral.

A family business transferred to his sons.

A lifetime of memories.

But now he stood in front of me.

Older.

Different.

Alive.

Maya grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I couldn’t answer.

My mind was trying to understand something impossible.

Alexander stepped forward.

“No.”

The word came out like a whisper.

“You…”

My father looked at him.

“Hello, Alexander.”

My brother looked like he had seen a ghost.

Because he had.

“Explain.”

My voice finally returned.

But it didn’t sound like me.

It sounded empty.

“You died.”

My father looked at me.

“I needed everyone to believe that.”

I stared at him.

“You faked your death?”

“Yes.”

The answer was so simple that it made me angry.

“Why?”

He looked around the abandoned estate.

“Because I discovered what was happening.”

I laughed.

“You discovered?”

I stepped forward.

“My daughter was traumatized.”

My voice rose.

“My wife died.”

“My family was destroyed.”

“And you were hiding?”

His expression changed.

“I was trying to protect you.”

The same words.

Again.

Everyone said them.

Everyone who failed us.

Thomas stepped forward.

“This was not supposed to happen.”

My father looked at him.

“You lost control.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“You disappeared.”

“And you continued.”

Silence.

A terrifying silence.

I looked between them.

“You two know each other.”

My father didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“How long?”

“Years.”

The answer made my stomach turn.

“Before Sarah?”

“Yes.”

“Before Eleanor?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the room full of secrets.

“How many people were involved?”

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor spoke.

“Too many.”

I turned toward her.

“You knew?”

She looked down.

“I knew pieces.”

“Pieces?”

“I knew Thomas was dangerous.”

“Then why did you marry me?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought I could fix it.”

The answer sounded impossible.

“You married me to fix something?”

“I thought if I became part of the family, I could stop him.”

Thomas laughed.

“You were never strong enough.”

Eleanor looked at him with anger.

“You used me.”

“Yes.”

The honesty shocked everyone.

Thomas didn’t even deny it.

My father walked toward the table.

He opened one of the old files.

“Richard, you need to understand something.”

“I’m listening.”

“Your grandfather made a mistake.”

I frowned.

“What mistake?”

“He destroyed another family.”

The Lucas story.

Again.

“He had a son.”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“He refused to recognize him.”

My father looked at the papers.

“Lucas grew up believing the Sterlings stole his future.”

“And he wanted revenge.”

“Yes.”

“Through Thomas.”

My father nodded.

“But Thomas wanted more.”

“What?”

“He wanted control.”

I looked at Thomas.

“So this was never about justice.”

Thomas smiled slightly.

“Justice is what people call revenge when they agree with it.”

I hated how calm he was.

“You destroyed innocent lives.”

“No.”

He looked at Maya.

“I revealed weaknesses.”

My anger exploded.

“She is a child.”

“And she is the key.”

I stepped toward him.

“What key?”

Thomas looked at my father.

“Tell him.”

My father stayed silent.

That silence scared me more than anything.

“Tell me what?”

Finally, my father spoke.

“When your grandfather created the Sterling trust…”

He looked at Maya.

“He added a condition.”

My daughter.

Again.

“What condition?”

My father answered:

“The inheritance could only pass to a descendant who carried the Sterling name and who was protected by the family.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Maya cannot inherit everything if she is removed from the family line.”

I froze.

“You mean…”

Thomas smiled.

“They needed Maya gone.”

The room became silent.

Maya looked confused.

But I understood.

All of it.

The isolation.

The emotional abuse.

The attempts to make her believe she didn't belong.

They weren’t trying to hurt her because they hated her.

They were trying to erase her.

Then Alexander suddenly spoke.

“There’s something you don’t know.”

Everyone looked at him.

“What?”

He looked at my father.

“You weren’t the only one who faked a death.”

My father’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Alexander pulled out his phone.

He showed a photograph.

A recent photograph.

The person in it made my blood freeze.

Because I knew that face.

The person standing beside Thomas.

The person everyone thought was Lucas.

But the photograph revealed something else.

A document attached.

A DNA report.

Alexander whispered:

“Lucas Sterling was never Thomas’s ally.”

I stared.

“Then who was he?”

Alexander looked at me.

And said:

“He was Sarah’s son.”

Nobody moved.

Not even Thomas.

The impossible became even more impossible.

Sarah.

My Sarah.

A son?

A secret?

A child I never knew existed?

My heart felt like it stopped.

“That’s impossible.”

Alexander shook his head.

“I thought so too.”

“Then explain.”

He looked at the DNA report.

“Because Sarah discovered him before she died.”

My breathing became shallow.

“And she hid him?”

“No.”

Alexander looked at Eleanor.

“She tried to save him.”

Before anyone could speak, the lights suddenly went out.

Darkness.

A crash.

Maya screamed.

I reached for her.

But someone grabbed my shoulder.

A voice whispered beside my ear.

“Richard…”

Not Thomas.

Not my father.

Someone else.

Someone who had been silent the entire time.

A woman.

Then the emergency lights turned on.

And everyone froze.

Because Maya was gone.

On the floor was a single note.

May you like

Written in Sarah’s handwriting.

"Richard, forgive me. I tried to protect both of my children."
