CHAPTER 15 The Child Sarah Never Told Me About

The note was on the floor.
Sarah’s handwriting.
The same handwriting I had seen in her journals.
The same handwriting that had filled my home with memories.
But the words made no sense.
“I tried to protect both of my children.”
Both.
The word echoed in my mind.
Because Sarah only had one child.
Maya.
At least…
that was what I believed.
I looked around the room.
Everyone was frozen.
My father.
Alexander.
Thomas.
Eleanor.
All of them carrying pieces of a truth I had never been allowed to see.
“Where is my daughter?”
My voice cut through the silence.
Nobody answered.
That was when I lost control.
“WHERE IS MAYA?”
The walls of the old estate seemed to shake.
Daniel immediately moved toward the exits.
“I’ll search the building.”
I followed.
“No.”
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m finding her.”
The old Sterling estate was massive.
Too massive.
A place built by wealthy people who wanted privacy.
A place with hidden rooms.
Secret passages.
Places where people could disappear.
Just like secrets.
“Maya!”
My voice echoed through empty hallways.
No answer.
I checked every room.
The library.
The old bedrooms.
The basement.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A small flower drawing on the floor.
A piece of paper.
Maya’s handwriting.
My heart stopped.
She had left it there.
Not accidentally.
A message.
I picked it up.
Three words.
“Trust Eleanor now.”
I stared at the paper.
Eleanor.
The woman I had spent days believing had hurt my daughter.
The woman who had hidden secrets.
The woman who had lied.
Why would Maya tell me to trust her?
I turned around.
Eleanor was standing behind me.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
“She knows.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
“She knows the truth.”
“What truth?”
Eleanor swallowed.
“The truth about Sarah.”
My anger returned.
“You knew about Lucas.”
She nodded.
“You knew Sarah had another child.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because Sarah made me promise.”
I stepped closer.
“Everyone keeps using Sarah’s name.”
My voice cracked.
“But nobody tells me why.”
Eleanor looked down.
“Because Sarah knew you would try to save everyone.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“She knew you.”
A pause.
“She knew you would forgive people who didn’t deserve forgiveness.”
We returned to the main hall.
My father was still there.
Waiting.
I looked at him.
“You knew about Sarah’s son.”
“Yes.”
“And you hid it from me.”
“Yes.”
The honesty almost hurt more than a lie.
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
I laughed bitterly.
“You?”
“My whole life, I built an empire.”
He looked around the abandoned house.
“But I failed to protect my own family.”
That was the first time I saw him as something other than powerful.
I saw an old man.
A man who knew he had destroyed everything.
“Where is Maya?”
He looked at Thomas.
Then at Eleanor.
“I don’t know.”
I stared.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
“Then who took her?”
Nobody answered.
Until Alexander spoke.
“It wasn’t Thomas.”
Everyone turned.
“What?”
Alexander looked at the security footage on his phone.
“I checked the cameras before they went offline.”
“You have footage?”
“Yes.”
“Show me.”
The video was blurry.
The hallway outside Maya’s room.
The lights went out.
A shadow entered.
Someone picked Maya up.
Then carried her away.
I watched carefully.
The person was wearing dark clothing.
A hood.
But the movement…
The height…
Something felt familiar.
Then the person turned slightly.
The face was visible for one second.
My breath stopped.
Because I knew her.
Everyone knew her.
Vanessa.
“No.”
Eleanor whispered.
“That’s impossible.”
I looked at her.
“You knew her.”
“Yes.”
“Was she working with Thomas?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
“Then why did she take Maya?”
Nobody had an answer.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
No one spoke at first.
Then a small voice.
A voice I would recognize anywhere.
“Daddy?”
My heart nearly broke.
“Maya.”
I closed my eyes.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“Where are you?”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“I’m with someone who knew Mommy.”
My hands tightened.
“Who?”
A pause.
Then:
“Someone Mommy trusted.”
The call became quiet.
“Maya?”
Then another voice appeared.
An adult voice.
A woman.
Calm.
Familiar.
“Richard.”
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew that voice.
But it was impossible.
Impossible because the woman speaking had been dead for six years.
“Sarah?”
Silence.
Then the voice answered:
“Yes.”
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
“Who is this?”
The woman laughed softly.
Not cruelly.
Sadly.
“Richard, I know this is impossible.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Where is my daughter?”
“She is safe.”
“Who are you?”
Another pause.
Then:
“The woman you thought you buried.”
The room went silent.
My father looked terrified.
Alexander stepped backward.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Because everyone understood the same thing.
If this voice was real…
then the biggest lie in our family was not about money.
Not about inheritance.
Not about Thomas.
It was about Sarah’s death.
The woman continued:
“Richard, listen carefully.”
Her voice became urgent.
“You cannot trust my family.”
I looked around the room.
“My family?”
“Yes.”
“Sarah…”
A pause.
Then she said:
“The people standing beside you are not the only Sterlings who survived.”
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Before she answered…
the call ended.
A message appeared seconds later.
A photo.
Maya.
Standing beside a woman.
The woman’s face was partially hidden.
But there was no doubt.
The bracelet.
The necklace.
The eyes.
The impossible resemblance.
It was Sarah.
May you like
And underneath the picture was one sentence:
"The truth about my death begins tonight."
