CHAPTER 19 The Secret Hidden Inside Maya’s Birth Certificate

The document was still open on my phone.
Nobody wanted to touch it.
Nobody wanted to read it.
Because everyone in that room understood one thing.
The truth had finally reached my daughter.
And whatever was written on that paper could change her entire life.
I looked at Sarah.
She was crying.
Not the kind of tears I had seen before.
Not fear.
Not sadness.
Something deeper.
Regret.
“Sarah.”
She didn’t answer.
“Tell me.”
Her hands trembled.
“Richard…”
“Tell me what it says.”
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“It’s not supposed to exist.”
Daniel carefully took the document.
He examined it.
“This looks like an official hospital record.”
My father stepped closer.
“Let me see.”
Daniel handed it to him.
The moment my father saw it…
his face changed.
A reaction I had never seen before.
Fear.
Pure fear.
“What?”
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.”
His hands tightened around the paper.
“This changes everything.”
I grabbed it from him.
I looked down.
At first, the words meant nothing.
Then I saw the names.
Child:
Maya Sterling
Mother:
Sarah Sterling
Father:
Richard Sterling
Everything looked normal.
Until I saw the final section.
Genetic Verification Record.
My eyes moved downward.
And stopped.
Because there was a second entry.
A second DNA sample.
A second biological marker.
One that was never supposed to exist.
“What does this mean?”
Nobody answered.
I looked at Sarah.
“What does this mean?”
She wiped her tears.
“Before Maya was born…”
She paused.
“I was told she might not survive.”
My heart tightened.
“What?”
“The pregnancy was complicated.”
I nodded slowly.
“I know.”
“No.”
Sarah shook her head.
“You don’t know everything.”
She sat down.
“I was told Maya had a genetic condition.”
I looked at Maya.
My daughter.
Perfect.
Healthy.
Beautiful.
“But the doctors later discovered the tests were wrong.”
“Wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Sarah looked at the document.
“Because someone changed the results.”
The room became silent.
Again.
Another manipulation.
Another person controlling information.
“Who?”
Sarah looked at Daniel.
He understood immediately.
“We never found out.”
My anger returned.
“How many times?”
Everyone looked at me.
“How many times did someone interfere with our lives?”
My voice broke.
“How many times did someone make decisions about my daughter without me knowing?”
Nobody answered.
Because there was no answer that would make it acceptable.
Then Alexander spoke.
“There’s something else.”
I almost laughed.
“Of course.”
He ignored the bitterness.
“Richard, Maya’s birth records were sealed.”
“Why?”
“Because your father ordered it.”
I turned.
“My father?”
He nodded.
“After Maya was born.”
I looked at my father.
“Why?”
My father looked at Maya.
Then away.
“Because I discovered something.”
“What?”
He took a deep breath.
“Maya’s DNA matched someone else in the family.”
My body went cold.
“What are you saying?”
My father looked at me.
“Maya carried a genetic marker from the original Sterling bloodline.”
I frowned.
“She’s my daughter.”
“Yes.”
“That’s impossible.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“It means someone from the family wanted to know exactly how valuable she was.”
I looked at Sarah.
“Is that why Thomas wanted her?”
Sarah nodded slowly.
“Partly.”
“Partly?”
She looked terrified.
“There is another reason.”
“What?”
Sarah looked toward Maya.
“She wasn’t just the heir.”
Silence.
“She was proof.”
“Proof of what?”
Sarah’s voice dropped.
“That the Sterling family’s original inheritance was never meant for your father.”
Everyone froze.
“What does that mean?”
Sarah reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this before I disappeared.”
She handed it to me.
The paper inside was ancient.
Yellow.
Fragile.
A letter.
Written by my grandfather.
I read the first line.
"To the child I was forced to abandon…"
My hands shook.
The letter was not addressed to me.
Not to my father.
Not to Alexander.
It was addressed to:
Lucas.
The letter explained everything.
My grandfather had a son.
But he wasn’t abandoned because of shame.
He was hidden because of a betrayal.
A betrayal involving someone else.
Someone who wanted the Sterling fortune.
Someone who manipulated both families.
And at the bottom of the letter was one final sentence:
"The person who destroyed our family was never a Sterling. They only pretended to be one."
I looked up.
Everyone was silent.
“Thomas?”
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who?”
She looked at the doorway.
And whispered:
“Someone who has been standing beside us the entire time.”
Before anyone could react…
the lights went out.
Again.
But this time, nobody panicked.
Because everyone knew.
Someone was here.
Someone who had access.
Someone who knew every secret.
A voice came from the darkness.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made Sarah stand up immediately.
“No…”
She whispered.
“Not you.”
The lights returned.
And standing in the doorway…
was someone from Sarah’s past.
Someone I had never met.
Someone holding a file.
Someone who said:
“Richard, you deserve to know the truth.”
He looked at Maya.
“Because she isn’t the only child Sarah was protecting.”
Everyone froze.
Because behind him…
stood another person.
A young woman.
May you like
Around twenty years old.
With Sarah’s eyes.
