CHAPTER 22 The Woman Everyone Blamed

The call ended.

But nobody moved.

The silence afterward was heavier than any scream.

My mother.

Alive.

Somewhere.

Watching.

Protecting Maya?

The words sounded impossible.

For years, I believed the people who disappeared from my life were the ones who abandoned me.

Sarah.

My brother Alexander.

My mother.

But now I was beginning to understand something terrifying.

Maybe they weren’t running away.

Maybe they were running toward a danger I couldn’t see.

“Richard.”

Sarah’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

“What?”

She hesitated.

“You need to hear her.”

I almost laughed.

“After everything?”

“Yes.”

“Sarah, my entire life has been built on lies.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

“Everyone decided what I could handle.”

“I know.”

“Everyone protected me by breaking me.”

She lowered her head.

And for once…

she didn’t defend herself.

“You’re right.”

The honesty surprised me.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Richard, your mother’s story is the missing piece.”

I looked at him.

“You knew about her too?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“But Sarah did.”

I turned.

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“How?”

“Because before I disappeared…”

She swallowed.

“I met her.”

The room froze.

“You met my mother?”

Sarah nodded.

“She came to me.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew Thomas was getting closer.”

I looked at Thomas.

He remained silent.

That bothered me.

“What did my mother tell you?”

Sarah looked toward Maya.

“She told me the truth about your family.”

“Which truth?”

“That your father wasn’t the person controlling Sterling Holdings.”

I looked at my father.

He didn’t react.

Because he already knew.

“Then who was?”

Sarah whispered:

“Your mother.”

I felt like the room tilted.

“My mother?”

Sarah nodded.

“But not for the reason everyone thinks.”

I frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“She wasn’t trying to steal the company.”

“Then what was she doing?”

“Trying to stop someone from taking it.”

Thomas suddenly laughed.

A cold, quiet laugh.

“After all these years, you still protect her.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Because unlike you, she had a reason.”

Thomas’s expression darkened.

“Careful.”

“No.”

Sarah stepped forward.

“I spent six years hiding because of you.”

The room became silent.

“You destroyed my family.”

Thomas looked away.

“You made choices.”

“I made choices because you forced them.”

I looked at Thomas.

“Explain.”

He smiled slightly.

“Sarah always wanted to believe she was the hero.”

“And?”

“She wasn’t.”

The words hung in the air.

“She was protecting a secret.”

“What secret?”

Thomas looked at Maya.

“The secret that your mother discovered.”

My patience disappeared.

“No more games.”

I stepped forward.

“Tell me.”

Thomas stared at me.

Then slowly said:

“Your mother discovered that Maya was never the only child connected to the Sterling inheritance.”

I frowned.

“We already know about Lucas.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You still don’t understand.”

The room went quiet.

“There was another child.”

My heart stopped.

Another?

Impossible.

“Who?”

Thomas looked at Sarah.

Sarah looked terrified.

Then Thomas said:

“Me.”

Nobody spoke.

Not even Thomas.

Because he knew how impossible that sounded.

“You’re lying.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I wish I was.”

I stared at him.

“You’re saying…”

“My mother was connected to the Sterling family.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

He stepped closer.

“The Vale family was never separate from Sterling.”

Alexander grabbed the old documents.

He searched through them.

Then suddenly stopped.

His face changed.

“Richard…”

“What?”

He turned the page.

“There’s a record here.”

“What record?”

“A birth record.”

My heart pounded.

“For who?”

Alexander looked up.

“Thomas.”

The room exploded.

Questions.

Confusion.

Anger.

But Thomas remained calm.

Because he had finally revealed the truth he wanted everyone to know.

“I was the forgotten child.”

I looked at him.

“So you destroyed everyone because you were hurt?”

His eyes hardened.

“No.”

He looked at Maya.

“I destroyed the system that allowed people like my father to erase children.”

The words almost sounded reasonable.

Almost.

But then I remembered Maya.

Alone.

Afraid.

Eating in the pantry.

And I knew.

No pain justified that.

Sarah walked toward Thomas.

“You could have stopped.”

He looked at her.

“You know what it feels like to lose everything.”

“Yes.”

“But you still chose love.”

She shook her head.

“I chose my children.”

Thomas smiled sadly.

“And I chose revenge.”

Suddenly, Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“What happened?”

He looked at me.

“Sir…”

“What?”

His voice became serious.

“The Sterling estate security system has been accessed.”

“By who?”

Daniel looked at the screen.

Then slowly said:

“Your mother.”

Everyone froze.

A message appeared on Daniel’s phone.

Only one sentence.

"I’m coming home."

Thirty minutes later…

A black car stopped outside the old estate.

The door opened.

A woman stepped out.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

A woman everyone thought was gone forever.

My mother.

She walked through the door.

Looked at me.

Looked at Maya.

Then looked at Sarah.

And the first words she said were:

“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you sooner.”

Nobody moved.

Then she turned toward Thomas.

And whispered:

“You still don’t know the whole truth.”

Thomas’s expression changed.

May you like

For the first time…

he looked afraid.
