CHAPTER 12 The Woman Who Knew Sarah’s Last Secret

The old Sterling cemetery looked different at night.

During the day, it was peaceful.

A place of memories.

A place where generations of my family rested beneath carefully carved stones.

But under the cold light of the moon, it felt like something else.

A place where secrets waited.

I parked the car near the entrance.

Daniel followed closely behind.

“Sir, this could be a trap.”

“I know.”

“You’re still going?”

I looked toward Sarah’s grave.

“Yes.”

Because if Vanessa truly knew what happened to my wife…

I needed to hear it.

No matter the risk.

We found Vanessa near the back section of the cemetery.

Near the oldest graves.

She was sitting on the ground.

Her expensive coat was torn.

Her hair was messy.

She looked nothing like the confident woman who had laughed beside Eleanor’s dinner table.

She looked terrified.

When she saw me, she stood quickly.

“Richard.”

“What happened?”

She looked behind me.

“Are you alone?”

“No.”

Her eyes moved to Daniel.

“That’s good.”

“Why?”

“Because you’ll need someone you trust.”

The words were strange.

Especially coming from her.

“Start talking.”

She swallowed.

“I know you hate me.”

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But you should.”

“Why?”

“Because I helped her.”

“Eleanor?”

She nodded.

“How?”

Vanessa looked at Sarah’s grave.

“Because I was there from the beginning.”

She took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, Eleanor came to me after Sarah became sick.”

I froze.

“Why?”

“She was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing you.”

I said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“At first, I thought Eleanor was just a woman afraid of loving someone who still loved his dead wife.”

I looked away.

“But then things changed.”

“How?”

“She started asking questions.”

“What questions?”

“About Maya.”

My jaw tightened.

“Her inheritance?”

Vanessa nodded.

“And your family trust.”

The answer confirmed my worst fear.

“What happened next?”

“Thomas entered the picture.”

Vanessa looked around nervously.

“He approached Eleanor when she was vulnerable.”

“Like he approached everyone.”

“Yes.”

“What did he tell her?”

“That Sarah was controlling you.”

I closed my eyes.

The same lie.

Over and over.

“He convinced Eleanor that once Sarah was gone, Maya would always be the center of your life.”

“And Eleanor believed him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Thomas showed her something.”

“What?”

“A document.”

“What document?”

“A medical report.”

My stomach tightened.

“Sarah’s medical report?”

“No.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yours.”

I stared at her.

“What?”

“He showed Eleanor documents about your mental health after Sarah died.”

I frowned.

“I never had mental health issues.”

“I know.”

“Then what was it?”

“Grief counseling.”

I felt a wave of anger.

“He twisted it.”

“Yes.”

“He made me look unstable.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“So Eleanor would believe she needed to protect herself.”

The pieces began connecting.

Thomas didn't create villains.

He created fear.

He found people's weaknesses.

Then he turned them against each other.

Eleanor’s insecurity.

Alexander’s desperation.

Vanessa’s loyalty.

My grief.

He used all of it.

“What about Sarah?”

Vanessa looked down.

“That’s the part I never forgave myself for.”

“What did you do?”

“I helped Thomas.”

My expression hardened.

“How?”

“I gave him information.”

“What information?”

“Sarah’s schedule.”

The cemetery seemed to go silent.

“You knew where Sarah was?”

“No.”

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“I only gave him information about meetings.”

“What meetings?”

“Sarah was investigating Sterling Holdings.”

“Because of Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“And you told him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because I thought he was helping Eleanor.”

I looked at her.

“You believed him.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“Then Sarah found out.”

A cold wind moved through the cemetery.

“What happened when Sarah found out?”

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“She called me.”

“What did she say?”

“She said…”

Vanessa stopped.

Then whispered:

“She said, ‘Vanessa, you don’t understand what you’ve helped create.’”

My heart tightened.

“What did Sarah know?”

Vanessa looked at the grave.

“She knew Thomas wasn’t trying to steal the company.”

“Then what?”

“He wanted something bigger.”

“What?”

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“He wanted the Sterling family destroyed.”

Before I could respond, Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“Daniel?”

He covered the phone.

“Sir…”

“What?”

“It’s Maya.”

My heart stopped.

“What happened?”

“She disappeared.”

The world went silent.

“What do you mean disappeared?”

“She was in the house.”

“Who was with her?”

“No one.”

I felt panic rise.

“No.”

Daniel continued.

“The security cameras went offline ten minutes ago.”

My hands tightened.

“Eleanor?”

“She’s missing too.”

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone pale.

“What?”

She whispered:

“No.”

“What?”

She stood suddenly.

“Thomas.”

“What about him?”

“He always said…”

She looked terrified.

“He always said the final step would be taking away the only person Richard would never stop fighting for.”

My blood turned cold.

“Maya.”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

We rushed back toward the car.

But before I reached it, my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

A video attachment.

I opened it.

The screen showed a dark room.

A small chair.

A child sitting in it.

My daughter.

Maya.

Her eyes were full of fear.

Then a man stepped into the frame.

Thomas.

He looked directly into the camera.

And smiled.

“Richard.”

He paused.

“You spent six years looking for the truth.”

His smile widened.

“Now I’m going to show you why Sarah really died.”

The video ended.

And beneath it was a location.

A place I knew.

A place connected to my family.

May you like

A place nobody had entered in decades.

The old Sterling estate.
