CHAPTER 18 The Person Sarah Trusted the Most

Maya’s finger remained on the photograph.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because the person she had pointed at was not Thomas.
Not my father.
Not Alexander.
Not even Eleanor.
It was someone else.
Someone who had stood beside me through every crisis.
Someone who had earned my trust for years.
Someone I never once considered a threat.
Daniel.
The room became completely silent.
I looked at him.
He didn’t deny it.
That was the first thing I noticed.
He didn’t look shocked.
He didn’t ask Maya if she was mistaken.
He simply stood there.
Accepting the accusation.
My stomach tightened.
“Daniel.”
His eyes met mine.
“Richard…”
“Tell me she’s wrong.”
A long pause.
Then he whispered:
“She’s not.”
Maya moved closer to Sarah.
I felt the entire world shift.
“No.”
My voice was barely audible.
“Explain.”
Daniel looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying this weight for years.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.”
“That’s not an explanation.”
He nodded slowly.
“You’re right.”
He looked at Sarah.
“I’m sorry.”
Sarah’s expression was filled with disappointment.
Not anger.
That was worse.
“You promised me.”
Daniel looked down.
“I know.”
“You promised you would never reveal it unless Richard was ready.”
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?”
Daniel looked at me.
“The truth about Sarah’s disappearance.”
I stepped closer.
“You helped her disappear.”
“Yes.”
The answer was devastating.
“You knew she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You helped fake her death.”
“Yes.”
I stared at him.
The man who had protected me.
The man who had guarded my daughter.
The man I trusted more than anyone.
“You let me suffer.”
His eyes filled with guilt.
“I know.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked at Sarah.
Then back at me.
“Because Sarah was right.”
“About what?”
“That someone was trying to destroy your family.”
I shook my head.
“And you thought destroying me first was the solution?”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I thought keeping you alive was the solution.”
The room became quiet again.
Sarah stepped forward.
“Richard, listen to him.”
I looked at her.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew everything?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“But I knew Daniel was helping me.”
I felt betrayed all over again.
“How many people knew?”
Sarah didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Daniel opened a small black folder.
“I need to show you something.”
I almost laughed.
Another folder.
Another secret.
But I took it.
Inside were surveillance photographs.
Not of Maya.
Not of Sarah.
Of me.
Hundreds of them.
My daily routine.
My meetings.
My business trips.
My conversations.
I looked at Daniel.
“What is this?”
“Evidence.”
“From who?”
“From the person who was watching you.”
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who hired Thomas.”
My heart started pounding.
“Who?”
Daniel placed one final photograph on the table.
It showed a meeting.
A private restaurant.
Two people sitting across from each other.
One was Thomas.
The other…
was someone whose face made everyone in the room freeze.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Eleanor stepped back.
Alexander whispered:
“No…”
I looked at Sarah.
She looked devastated.
Because she knew.
The person meeting Thomas was…
my mother.
For a moment, nobody understood.
My mother had died ten years earlier.
Before Sarah.
Before Eleanor.
Before all of this.
Another dead person.
Another impossible truth.
“This is fake.”
My voice shook.
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Impossible.”
“I verified it.”
“How?”
“DNA records.”
The room went cold.
“Your mother is alive.”
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
My mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman I buried.
Another disappearance.
Another lie.
“How long?”
Daniel answered:
“Ten years.”
My father closed his eyes.
That reaction told me everything.
I turned toward him.
“You knew.”
My father said nothing.
“DID YOU KNOW?”
Slowly…
he nodded.
The anger I felt was different now.
Not the anger of betrayal.
The anger of realizing my entire life had been built on missing pieces.
“You all knew.”
Nobody answered.
“You all decided what I could handle.”
Silence.
“You all played with my life.”
Sarah cried.
“Richard…”
I stepped away.
Not because I hated her.
Because I didn’t know what was real anymore.
Then Maya spoke.
Small.
Quiet.
But everyone heard.
“Daddy.”
I turned.
She looked at Sarah.
Then at me.
“Mommy said she didn’t leave because she didn’t love us.”
My heart broke.
“What did she say?”
Maya whispered:
“She said she left because someone was going to hurt me.”
Everyone froze.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Because she knew something.
“What else did Mommy tell you?”
Maya looked scared.
“She said…”
She hesitated.
Then continued:
“She said the person who wanted to hurt me was someone who loved me.”
Nobody moved.
Because those words changed everything.
The enemy was not someone who hated the Sterling family.
It was someone who belonged to it.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
At that moment, every phone in the room received the same message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"You finally found the truth about the past. Now discover the truth about Maya."
Attached was a photograph.
A hospital document.
A birth record.
The name on it made Sarah collapse into a chair.
Because it wasn’t Maya’s birth certificate.
It was a different one.
With a different mother.
May you like
A different father.
And a secret that meant Maya was not who we thought she was.
