CHAPTER 20 The Daughter Sarah Hid From the World

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Not one person.

Not even Sarah.

Because the young woman standing in the doorway looked impossible.

She had Sarah’s eyes.

The same gentle eyes.

The same expression.

The same small movement of her hands when she was nervous.

A gesture I had seen hundreds of times from my wife.

But this girl wasn’t Maya.

She was older.

A stranger.

Yet somehow…

she looked like someone who belonged.

Sarah slowly stood.

Her face had lost all color.

“No…”

The young woman looked at her.

“Hello, Mom.”

The room froze.

Maya looked confused.

I looked at Sarah.

And Sarah looked like her entire past had just walked back into her life.

“Who is she?”

My voice was quiet.

But everyone heard.

The young woman stepped forward.

“My name is Lily.”

She looked at me.

“And I’m Sarah’s daughter.”

The words didn’t make sense.

Sarah’s daughter.

Another child.

Another secret.

Another impossible truth.

I looked at Sarah.

She couldn’t look at me.

“Richard…”

I shook my head.

“No.”

My voice cracked.

“Not another secret.”

Tears filled Sarah’s eyes.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

She didn’t answer.

“When were you going to tell me?”

Nobody spoke.

Because there was no good answer.

Lily stepped forward.

“Please don’t blame her.”

I looked at her.

“You don’t know what happened.”

“Yes, I do.”

Her voice was calm.

“Because I was there.”

I frowned.

“What?”

She looked at Thomas.

Then at the old files scattered across the table.

“I know everything.”

The man standing beside her finally spoke.

The man who brought her here.

“I’m David.”

Nobody recognized him.

“I worked with Sarah before she disappeared.”

Daniel immediately became alert.

“Worked with her how?”

David looked at him.

“Finding the truth.”

The room went silent.

“You knew Sarah was investigating?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

David looked at the documents.

“Because Sarah discovered that the Sterling family wasn’t the only family with secrets.”

Sarah wiped her tears.

“Lily was born before I met Richard.”

I stared.

“Before me?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

Sarah looked at Lily.

Then whispered:

“I was young.”

A pause.

“I made mistakes.”

Lily looked away.

“But I never abandoned her.”

I looked at Lily.

“Then why didn’t I know?”

Sarah’s tears fell.

“Because Thomas found out about her.”

The name changed everything.

Again.

“He threatened you.”

Sarah nodded.

“He told me if I ever revealed Lily’s existence, he would destroy her life.”

“Why?”

“Because Lily was proof.”

“Proof of what?”

Sarah looked at Maya.

Then at Lily.

“Proof that Thomas had been manipulating the Sterling family for years.”

David opened the file he carried.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Records.

One image caught my attention.

Thomas.

Young.

Standing beside Sarah.

Before I met her.

Before everything.

My heart tightened.

“You knew him.”

Sarah nodded.

“He was the reason I ran.”

I looked at Thomas.

The man who had controlled everyone.

“You knew Sarah before me.”

Thomas smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

“Explain.”

“She discovered who I really was.”

“And who were you?”

Thomas looked at the old photograph.

“Someone who wanted revenge.”

David placed another document on the table.

“This is the final piece.”

I looked down.

It was a company transfer record.

A name appeared.

The original owner of the Sterling trust.

Not my father.

Not my grandfather.

A different name.

Amelia Vale.

Thomas’s mother.

I looked up.

“What?”

David explained:

“Your grandfather didn’t steal from the Vale family.”

“He made a deal.”

“What deal?”

“A deal to protect both families.”

“Then why did everything happen?”

David looked at Thomas.

“Because someone broke that deal.”

Everyone turned.

Thomas remained silent.

For the first time…

he looked uncertain.

David continued:

“The person who started the war between Sterling and Vale wasn’t your grandfather.”

“Who?”

David looked at Sarah.

Sarah closed her eyes.

Because she knew.

Then David said:

“Thomas himself.”

The room exploded.

“No.”

Thomas stepped forward.

“You’re lying.”

David shook his head.

“You manipulated everyone.”

“You used Lucas.”

“You used Eleanor.”

“You used Vanessa.”

“You used Alexander.”

“You even used Richard’s father.”

Thomas’s face became darker.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

David looked at him.

“We understand perfectly.”

I looked at Thomas.

“All this time…”

My voice became cold.

“You said you wanted justice.”

Thomas stared at me.

“I did.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You wanted control.”

Silence.

“You didn’t want the Sterling family punished.”

I looked at Maya.

“You wanted them destroyed.”

Suddenly, Thomas smiled.

Not an angry smile.

A confident one.

Because he knew something we didn’t.

“You still don’t understand.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The game was never about inheritance.”

My heart tightened.

“Then what?”

Thomas looked at Sarah.

Then Maya.

Then Lily.

“It was about blood.”

The room went silent.

“What does that mean?”

Thomas stepped backward.

“Ask Sarah.”

Everyone turned.

Sarah looked terrified.

Because she knew what was coming.

Thomas whispered:

“Ask her why Maya was never supposed to be Richard’s daughter.”

I felt like the ground disappeared.

“What?”

Sarah’s face broke.

“Richard…”

I stepped back.

“No.”

My voice shook.

“No more secrets.”

Maya looked at me.

Confused.

Scared.

Sarah started crying.

And Thomas delivered the final blow:

“The truth about Maya’s birth…”

He smiled.

“…is the secret Sarah died trying to protect.”
