CHAPTER 21 The Truth Sarah Was Willing to Die For

The room felt smaller.
The walls of the old Sterling estate seemed to close in around us.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because one sentence had destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“The truth about Maya’s birth is the secret Sarah died trying to protect.”
I looked at Sarah.
The woman I had loved.
The woman I buried.
The woman who came back into my life carrying more secrets than answers.
“Tell me.”
My voice was quiet.
But there was no anger left.
Only exhaustion.
“Sarah…”
She looked at me.
Her eyes were full of pain.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t care how I find out anymore.”
I pointed around the room.
“I just want the truth.”
Maya stood beside Sarah.
Holding her hand.
That hurt the most.
My daughter trusted her mother.
Even after everything.
Even after the disappearance.
Even after all the years of pain.
Because children don’t stop loving their parents just because they don’t understand them.
Sarah looked at Maya.
Then back at me.
“Before Maya was born…”
She stopped.
Took a breath.
“I discovered something about the Sterling family.”
“Another secret?”
She nodded.
“But this one was different.”
“How?”
“Because it wasn’t about money.”
She looked at Maya.
“It was about identity.”
Thomas stood in the corner.
Watching.
Waiting.
Like he had been waiting years for this moment.
“Tell him, Sarah.”
Her eyes moved toward him.
“You always hated that I found out.”
Thomas smiled.
“No.”
He shook his head.
“I hated that you tried to hide it.”
Sarah’s expression hardened.
“Because hiding it was the only way to keep her safe.”
“Safe?”
Thomas laughed.
“You don’t even know what you protected.”
I stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Both looked at me.
“This ends now.”
I looked at Sarah.
“Start from the beginning.”
She nodded.
And finally…
she told me everything.
“When I met you, Richard, I already knew about Sterling Holdings.”
I frowned.
“I thought you met me because of the office project.”
“That was true.”
“But?”
“But I also knew your family had enemies.”
I looked at Thomas.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I thought I could handle it.”
I almost smiled.
“You thought you could protect everyone.”
Sarah looked down.
“Yes.”
The same mistake everyone around me made.
They loved me.
But they didn’t trust me enough to let me fight beside them.
“After we married, I became pregnant with Maya.”
Sarah continued.
“That was when I discovered something strange.”
“What?”
“The hospital records.”
“The same records that were changed?”
“Yes.”
She looked at the document.
“Someone had attempted to alter Maya’s genetic information before she was even born.”
My heart tightened.
“Why?”
“Because they wanted to know if she carried something.”
“What?”
Sarah looked at my father.
A long silence passed.
Then my father spoke.
“The original Sterling bloodline marker.”
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?”
He sighed.
“Your grandfather created a private trust.”
“I know.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“You know the public version.”
He looked at Maya.
“The private version said the inheritance would belong only to a descendant who carried the original bloodline.”
I frowned.
“She is my daughter.”
“Yes.”
“But?”
My father looked away.
“But Maya’s DNA showed something unexpected.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?”
Sarah answered.
“She carried a genetic marker from Amelia Vale.”
Thomas’s mother.
The room went silent.
“That’s impossible.”
Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at Thomas.
“It means the Sterling and Vale families were connected long before anyone knew.”
Thomas smiled.
“Exactly.”
I looked at him.
“So why hide it?”
His smile disappeared.
“Because the truth would destroy everything.”
“What truth?”
Thomas stared at Maya.
“Your daughter is not just the heir of Sterling.”
A pause.
“She is the heir of both families.”
Everyone went silent.
Alexander stepped forward.
“Then why did you try to destroy her?”
Thomas didn’t answer immediately.
And that was when I noticed something.
For the first time…
he looked conflicted.
Not guilty.
Not sorry.
Conflicted.
“I didn’t want her destroyed.”
I stared.
“You kidnapped her.”
“I wanted her away from people who would use her.”
Everyone looked at him.
“What are you talking about?”
Thomas looked at Sarah.
“She never told you.”
Sarah’s face changed.
“Thomas.”
“You didn’t tell him that Maya was in danger before I ever appeared.”
My heart stopped.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas continued:
“Someone else was trying to take Maya.”
“Who?”
He looked around the room.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Then his eyes stopped.
On my father.
My father’s expression changed.
“Don’t.”
Thomas smiled.
“Tell him.”
I looked at my father.
“What is he talking about?”
Nobody answered.
Then my father whispered:
“I was trying to protect the family.”
My heart sank.
“What did you do?”
His eyes filled with regret.
“I made a deal.”
“With who?”
He looked at Thomas.
“With the person who wanted control of Sterling Holdings.”
“Who?”
My father closed his eyes.
Then said:
“Your mother.”
The room froze.
My mother.
The woman everyone thought was dead.
The woman connected to all of this.
Sarah covered her mouth.
“No…”
My father looked broken.
“She wasn’t supposed to come back.”
A phone suddenly rang.
Everyone turned.
It was mine.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a woman’s voice.
A voice I had never heard.
But somehow recognized.
“Richard.”
I froze.
“Who is this?”
A pause.
Then:
“The woman your father betrayed.”
My blood ran cold.
“Mom?”
Silence.
Then she whispered:
“Yes.”
A second later, she said:
“You have been looking for the enemy inside your family.”
Another pause.
“But you never asked the most important question.”
My grip tightened.
“What question?”
Her answer came softly:
“What if I was the one protecting Maya all along?”
The call ended.
Everyone stared at me.
Because suddenly…
May you like
the person everyone feared…
might have been the only person telling the truth.
