CHAPTER 17 The Man Who Knew Too Much

The room went silent.
Not the uncomfortable silence from before.
Not the silence of secrets being hidden.
This was different.
This was the silence of a truth arriving before anyone was ready.
Daniel stood at the doorway.
Rain falling behind him.
His face expressionless.
But his eyes…
His eyes told me everything.
He knew.
For the first time since this nightmare began, I looked at Daniel differently.
Not as my security chief.
Not as the man who protected my family.
But as someone who had been standing beside me while the truth remained hidden.
“Daniel.”
My voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
He didn’t move.
“Richard…”
“Come inside.”
He hesitated.
Then stepped into the room.
Sarah looked at him.
“You knew I was alive.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
Maya held my hand tighter.
Eleanor looked shocked.
Alexander looked confused.
And my father…
looked terrified.
“How long?”
I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Six years.”
The answer hurt.
Six years.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another betrayal.
“You knew Sarah survived.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
“I was ordered not to.”
I stared.
“By who?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He looked at Sarah.
Then at me.
Finally:
“By Sarah.”
The room froze.
I turned toward my wife.
“You asked him to lie?”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I knew someone was watching you.”
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.”
My voice cracked.
“Everyone keeps making decisions for me.”
Sarah looked devastated.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“By letting me think you were dead?”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
The answer hurt more than an excuse.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Richard, you need to understand something.”
I looked at him.
“Explain.”
“After Sarah discovered Thomas’s plan, she realized the danger was bigger than anyone expected.”
“What danger?”
Daniel looked around the room.
“Someone inside Sterling Holdings was creating false records.”
The same thing Sarah showed me.
My name.
My identity.
My accounts.
“Someone was pretending to be me.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Daniel was silent.
“Who?”
He looked at my father.
And my father looked away.
That reaction was enough.
I turned.
“Dad.”
He didn’t respond.
“Tell me.”
My father sat down slowly.
“I knew.”
The words hit harder than anything.
“You knew someone was using my identity?”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was trying to contain it.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Contain it?”
“My life was destroyed.”
“Maya was hurt.”
“Sarah disappeared.”
“And you were containing it?”
My father looked broken.
“I made mistakes.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You made choices.”
Sarah walked toward me.
“Richard.”
I looked at her.
“There is something else.”
I almost laughed.
“Of course there is.”
She accepted the pain in my words.
“The person using your identity wasn’t trying to steal money.”
“Then what?”
“They were building a case.”
“Against me?”
“Yes.”
My heart sank.
“Why?”
“Because if they could prove Richard Sterling was responsible for illegal actions…”
She stopped.
I understood.
“I would lose everything.”
Sarah nodded.
“And Maya’s inheritance would be transferred.”
“To who?”
Nobody spoke.
Then Alexander whispered:
“Lucas.”
The name hung in the room.
Lucas.
The forgotten Sterling child.
The person everyone blamed.
But Sarah shook her head.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Lucas was never the mastermind.”
“Then who?”
Sarah looked toward the documents.
“The person who benefits most from Lucas taking control.”
My mind raced.
Thomas.
No.
Thomas wanted revenge.
My father?
No.
He was hiding something.
Eleanor?
No.
She was manipulated.
Alexander?
No.
He had been trying to expose it.
Then who?
Daniel slowly placed a folder on the table.
“I found this three years ago.”
I looked at him.
“Three years?”
“Yes.”
“And you kept it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I was waiting.”
“For what?”
“For the right moment.”
I opened the folder.
Inside was a photograph.
A family gathering.
Years ago.
Before Sarah became sick.
Everyone was there.
My father.
Alexander.
Me.
Sarah.
Eleanor.
Thomas.
Vanessa.
But one person stood behind us.
Someone I never noticed.
Someone who had always been there.
Someone who had access to everything.
I looked closer.
Then my blood ran cold.
Because the person in the photograph…
was not a stranger.
It was someone I trusted.
Someone I had defended.
Someone who had always told me:
“I’m here for your family.”
Maya looked at the picture.
Then whispered:
“Daddy…”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She pointed at the person.
“I know him.”
My heart stopped.
“What did you say?”
Maya’s face became pale.
“He used to come to Mommy’s room.”
Sarah turned sharply.
“Who?”
Maya pointed.
At the photograph.
And said:
“The man who told Mommy not to be scared.”
Everyone looked.
And nobody spoke.
May you like
Because the person Maya pointed at…
was the last person anyone expected.
