CHAPTER 16 The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

The photograph stayed on my phone.

I stared at it until my eyes hurt.

Because my mind refused to accept what my heart already knew.

The woman standing beside Maya looked like Sarah.

Not similar.

Not close.

Sarah.

The same eyes.

The same gentle expression.

The same necklace she wore every day before she died.

The necklace I placed beside her in the hospital.

The necklace I buried with her.

But impossible things had become normal in the Sterling family.

Dead brothers.

Hidden children.

Secret rooms.

Fake identities.

And now…

a wife who might not have died.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, my father whispered:

“She’s alive.”

Everyone looked at him.

I turned slowly.

“You knew?”

His expression changed.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Dad.”

He looked at me.

“How long?”

He closed his eyes.

“I thought she was gone.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He looked broken.

“Richard…”

“How long?”

A long silence.

Then:

“Six years.”

The room exploded.

“You knew she might be alive?”

“No.”

“Then what did you know?”

My father looked at the photograph.

“I knew Sarah was planning something.”

“What?”

“To disappear.”

The words hit me harder than anything.

Disappear.

My wife.

The mother of my child.

The woman I mourned.

She planned to leave?

“Why?”

My father looked toward the old fireplace.

“Because she discovered the truth.”

“What truth?”

“The truth about Thomas.”

I clenched my fists.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

I pointed at the room.

“Everyone knows something except me.”

My voice broke.

“I was her husband.”

Nobody answered.

Because they knew I was right.

Eleanor stepped forward.

“I need to tell you something.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Sarah didn’t want you involved.”

My expression hardened.

“Why?”

“Because she knew you would destroy yourself trying to save her.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You mean she didn’t trust me?”

“No.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“She trusted you too much.”

That answer hurt more.

Daniel interrupted.

“Sir.”

I looked at him.

“We traced the photograph.”

“And?”

“It was taken tonight.”

My heart stopped.

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

He looked at the coordinates.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

“It was taken at a property owned by Sterling Holdings.”

Another family property.

Another hidden place.

“Where?”

Daniel looked at me.

“The old lake house.”

My blood ran cold.

The lake house.

The place Sarah and I went every summer.

The place where Maya took her first steps.

The place where I proposed.

The place where Sarah disappeared from our lives.

We drove there immediately.

Nobody spoke during the journey.

Everyone was trapped inside their own thoughts.

When we arrived, the house lights were on.

That alone was impossible.

Nobody had been there for years.

I walked toward the door.

My hand trembled.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I wondered if I was about to see a ghost.

The door opened before I touched it.

And there she was.

Sarah.

Alive.

Standing in front of me.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

The world disappeared.

The rain disappeared.

The past six years disappeared.

There was only her.

“Richard…”

Her voice broke.

I couldn’t breathe.

I wanted to run to her.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted answers.

Instead, I whispered:

“Is it really you?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

My knees almost gave out.

Because every emotion arrived at once.

Love.

Pain.

Anger.

Confusion.

“You let me bury you.”

Her face broke.

“I know.”

“You let Maya believe she lost her mother.”

“I know.”

“Do you know what that did to us?”

She cried silently.

“I know.”

My voice became quieter.

“Then why?”

Sarah looked toward the room behind her.

Maya was sitting there.

Safe.

The second I saw my daughter, I moved.

I hugged her.

She held onto me tightly.

“Daddy.”

I closed my eyes.

“You’re okay.”

She nodded.

“Mommy saved me.”

I looked at Sarah.

“What happened?”

Sarah took a deep breath.

“I never wanted to leave you.”

“Then why?”

“Because I discovered Thomas was planning something.”

“We know.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You know only part of it.”

Everyone became silent.

Sarah continued:

“Thomas wasn’t trying to steal the Sterling fortune.”

“Then what?”

“He was trying to erase the Sterling family.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

“Because he believed the family ruined his life.”

“The Lucas situation.”

Sarah nodded.

“But Lucas was not the person behind everything.”

I froze.

“What?”

Sarah looked at me.

“The person controlling Thomas was someone else.”

Everyone looked at each other.

“Who?”

Sarah’s expression became painful.

“Someone closer.”

She walked to an old cabinet.

Inside was a stack of documents.

“I found these before I disappeared.”

She placed them on the table.

Medical records.

Financial transfers.

Private messages.

Then one file.

A name.

My hands stopped.

Because the name was impossible.

RICHARD STERLING.

My own name.

“What is this?”

Sarah looked at me with tears.

“The reason I had to leave.”

I opened the file.

Inside were documents I had never seen.

Payments.

Transfers.

Orders.

All connected to me.

“No.”

I looked at Sarah.

“This is fake.”

“I wanted it to be.”

My heart raced.

“What are you saying?”

Sarah whispered:

“Richard…”

She touched my hand.

“Someone has been using your identity for years.”

The room became silent.

A new possibility appeared.

Someone had been pretending.

Someone had manipulated everyone.

Someone had access to my name.

My accounts.

My family.

My life.

Then Sarah said the words that changed everything:

“The person who started this entire nightmare…”

She looked toward the doorway.

“…is someone who has been protecting you from the beginning.”

Everyone turned.

Because standing outside the lake house…

was someone nobody expected.

Someone who had helped us uncover every secret.

May you like

Someone who had been loyal for years.

Daniel.
