Chapter 9 - THE MAN BESIDE THE PLANE

Wind moved across the empty airfield.
Vanessa’s wedding veil dragged behind her across the pavement.
Mercer kept the gun pointed at Lucas.
“Give me the necklace.”
Lucas held it tightly.
“You killed Rachel.”
“She was going to destroy everything.”
“She was protecting patients.”
“She was protecting her reputation.”
“She found that you changed trial results.”
Mercer’s face twisted.
“The research was working.”
“People died.”
“Every medical advancement has risk.”
“You hid the deaths.”
“I prevented panic.”
Vanessa looked toward the aircraft.
“Andrew, we need to leave.”
Mercer ignored her.
Lucas stepped closer.
“You introduced me to Vanessa.”
“I needed someone inside your life.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
“You said we met by accident.”
Mercer laughed.
“You were useful.”
Her face changed.
“You told me we were partners.”
“We were.”
“Were?”
Mercer’s eyes remained on the necklace.
“You planned to leave without me.”
Vanessa moved toward him.
He pointed the gun at her.
“Do not make this emotional.”
Lucas recognized the phrase.
Mercer used it whenever anyone questioned him.
He had said it after Rachel died.
Do not make this emotional.
Think about Emma.
Let the hospital handle the details.
For three years, Lucas believed Mercer’s calmness was strength.
Now he saw it for what it was.
A lack of conscience.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“You need me to control the trust.”
“Not after the archive opens.”
“You cannot access the shares.”
“I do not need the shares.”
Mercer wanted the medical archive destroyed.
Vanessa wanted Emma’s fortune.
Their goals had never been the same.
Lucas lifted the necklace.
“You both lose if I destroy this.”
Mercer aimed directly at his chest.
“You will not.”
“Why?”
“Because it belongs to Emma.”
Mercer smiled.
“You are too sentimental to destroy her mother’s final gift.”
Lucas looked toward Vanessa.
“Did he tell you Rachel’s evidence would make you wealthy?”
Vanessa did not answer.
“He planned to erase it.”
“You would get nothing.”
Mercer’s attention shifted toward her.
It lasted only a second.
Lucas threw the necklace beneath the aircraft.
Mercer fired.
The shot struck the pavement near Lucas’s feet.
Federal lights exploded around the airfield.
Agents moved from behind the hangars.
Mercer grabbed Vanessa and pressed the gun against her neck.
“Back away.”
Vanessa screamed.
Lucas did not move.
“You said you wanted to be family.”
“Help me.”
“You locked my daughter in a bathroom.”
“He will kill me.”
Mercer dragged her toward the aircraft.
The pilot opened the cockpit door.
Then he raised both hands.
He was an undercover federal agent.
Mercer realized too late.
Vanessa twisted away.
The gun fired again.
The bullet struck the aircraft door.
Agents tackled Mercer to the ground.
Vanessa fell onto the pavement.
Lucas crawled beneath the plane and recovered the necklace.
Detective Reyes placed Mercer in handcuffs.
Vanessa sat with her torn wedding dress spread around her.
She looked at Lucas.
“I helped you.”
“You saved yourself.”
“You would have been shot.”
“You were leaving with the man who killed Rachel.”
“I did not know.”
“You knew enough to drug me.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“I loved you.”
“No.”
Lucas closed the necklace inside his hand.
“You loved the life around me.”
Agents led Mercer away.
Vanessa remained free for the moment.
Her attorney had already secured an emergency order preventing arrest without a formal indictment.
She rose slowly.
“You think this ends with Andrew.”
Lucas stared at her.
“It ends when Emma is safe.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Then it will never end.”
She entered her attorney’s car.
Before the door closed, Lucas noticed a flash of silver inside the torn seam of her dress.
The envelope and recorder had been removed.

Something else remained hidden deeper in the lining.
Vanessa had carried a second secret through the entire wedding.
