Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT RACHEL DIED

Claire stared at Lucas.

“What did he say?”

“He told me to ask why Rachel was driving.”

Claire looked toward Emma.

The child remained asleep.

Claire carefully moved away from the sofa.

“Not here.”

They entered the adjoining study.

Lucas closed the door.

“Tell me.”

Claire pressed both hands against the desk.

“The night Rachel died, she called me.”

“You never told me that.”

“She made me promise not to.”

“She was frightened.”

“Of what?”

Claire struggled to speak.

“She believed someone had accessed Emma’s trust documents.”

Lucas felt the room shift around him.

“Who?”

“She did not know.”

“She found copies missing from the home safe.”

“She also found emails between Andrew and an attorney from Hartwell and Pierce.”

The same law firm had prepared Vanessa’s forged custody petition.

Lucas stepped back.

“Why did Rachel not tell me?”

“She planned to.”

“She was driving to meet you.”

Lucas remembered that night.

He had been at a hotel in Santa Monica negotiating the sale of a technology company.

Rachel called him twice.

He ignored the first call.

He sent the second to voicemail.

He told himself he would call after the meeting.

An hour later, Mercer called and said Rachel’s car had left the road.

“Why did you keep this from me?”

Claire began crying.

“Because the police called it an accident.”

“Because Andrew said Rachel was exhausted.”

“Because you could barely get out of bed.”

“That was not your decision.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Lucas’s voice broke.

“You decided I could not handle the truth.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You were protecting yourself from watching me suffer.”

Claire accepted the words without defending herself.

Lucas turned away.

He wanted to be angry with her.

He was angry.

But beneath the anger was a worse realization.

Everyone around him had been deciding what truth he was allowed to know.

Vanessa had decided Emma should disappear.

Mercer had decided Lucas should be drugged.

Claire had decided Rachel’s final fear should remain buried.

Lucas had built an empire around information.

Yet the people closest to him had hidden the most important facts of his life.

Detective Reyes entered the study.

“We received the hospital file.”

Rachel’s original blood sample showed traces of a sedative.

The final report did not.

Andrew Mercer had signed the amended toxicology form.

Reyes placed two reports side by side.

“The first sample was processed at 2:14 a.m.”

“The amended report was entered at 4:37 a.m.”

“Mercer accessed the lab between those times.”

Lucas looked at the signature.

“What does the drug do?”

“It causes dizziness, slowed reaction time, and confusion.”

“The same effects planned for the champagne?”

“The compound is different.”

“The purpose is similar.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Lucas asked the question directly.

“Was Rachel drugged before she drove?”

“We do not know yet.”

Reyes continued.

“Her vehicle was destroyed after the investigation.”

“However, the insurance company retained photographs.”

“One image shows a puncture in the rear brake line.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

Rachel’s death might not have been an accident.

The wedding plot was not the beginning.

It was the second attempt.

Rachel had discovered someone targeting Emma’s trust.

Three years later, Vanessa and Mercer were still trying to complete the plan.

Lucas looked toward the hallway where his daughter slept.

“What is in that trust that they want so badly?”

Claire answered quietly.

“It may not be the money.”

Rachel had placed something else under Emma’s ownership.

A controlling block of shares in Bennett Adaptive Systems.

The company developed medical artificial intelligence used in hospitals across the country.

Those shares were worth billions.

More importantly, they carried access rights to a protected research archive.

Andrew Mercer had once worked on that research.

Rachel removed him after discovering manipulated clinical data.

If Emma’s trust opened the archive, Mercer’s career would be destroyed.

The wedding was not only about stealing Emma’s future.

It was about burying Rachel’s evidence forever.
