Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT EMMA DISAPPEARED

Child protection officials arrived the following morning.

They interviewed Lucas.

They interviewed Emma.

They examined the home.

They found no evidence of neglect.

However, the synthetic recordings had created enough concern for a court hearing.

Vanessa filed an emergency petition.

She claimed she had acted as Emma’s primary emotional caregiver for the previous year.

She requested temporary supervised access to the child.

Lucas’s attorneys called the petition absurd.

The judge did not dismiss it.

Vanessa had photographs of school events.

Birthday dinners.

Doctor visits.

Family vacations.

Every image showed her behaving like a devoted future stepmother.

The cruelty occurred outside the camera frame.

The judge ordered Emma to remain with Lucas.

However, a court-appointed child advocate would monitor the case.

Lucas hated the decision.

He accepted it because Emma remained home.

Two nights later, the advocate arrived for an unannounced visit.

Her identification appeared legitimate.

She introduced herself as Karen Bell.

Lucas’s security team verified the name through the county database.

Karen asked to speak with Emma privately in the garden.

Lucas refused.

The advocate said the court order required private access.

Nathan called the courthouse.

A clerk confirmed the appointment.

Lucas allowed Emma into the glass conservatory while he watched from thirty feet away.

Five minutes later, the fire alarm activated.

Sprinklers erupted throughout the house.

Security doors automatically opened.

The conservatory filled with smoke from a canister hidden beneath a bench.

Lucas ran through the haze.

Emma was gone.

The woman calling herself Karen Bell had disappeared through the garden.

A maintenance van left the property seconds before the gates closed.

Lucas felt his entire body go cold.

Security traced the license plate.

It belonged to the real Karen Bell.

She had been found unconscious in her apartment that morning.

Someone stole her credentials.

Vanessa’s petition had revealed the exact procedure for an advocate’s visit.

The abduction had been planned around it.

Lucas called Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

“Where is Emma?”

Her voice was calm.

“I do not know.”

“You filed the petition.”

“I requested lawful contact.”

“Someone used it to take her.”

“That sounds like a security failure.”

Lucas pressed the phone harder against his ear.

“You will not survive this.”

“Threatening me while a court is evaluating your stability is not wise.”

He ended the call before rage overcame him.

Detective Reyes arrived with federal agents.

Camera footage showed the false advocate entering the maintenance van.

The driver wore a baseball cap.

Facial recognition identified Patricia Caldwell’s personal assistant.

Patricia was brought in for questioning.

She denied involvement.

Then Reyes showed her a photograph of the van.

Patricia began shaking.

“Vanessa said they were taking Emma to a safe place.”

“Where?”

“I do not know.”

“Who is they?”

Patricia looked toward Lucas.

“Vanessa and a man named Derek Shaw.”

Lucas knew the name.

Derek was an investment attorney at Hartwell and Pierce.

He had prepared the forged custody documents.

Patricia continued.

“Derek owns a lake house near Arrowhead.”

Lucas remembered Emma’s words after the wedding.

She said Vanessa told someone she would be family only until the lake.

At the time, no one understood.

Now they did.

Emma had overheard the escape location.

A storm had closed the mountain roads.

Police helicopters could not fly.

Lucas joined the search convoy.

Detective Reyes ordered him to remain behind.

He refused.

“That is my daughter.”

“You are also emotionally compromised.”

“I have been emotionally compromised since the day she was born.”

He entered the vehicle.

Three hours later, they reached the lake house.

The front door was open.

The interior was empty.

On the dining table sat Emma’s blue hair ribbon.

Beside it was a photograph of the Bellamy Estate wedding hall.
