Chapter 2 - THE ENVELOPE IN THE SILK

Claire reached Vanessa before she made it to the staircase.
She did not grab her.
She simply stepped into her path.
“Where are you going?”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I am leaving my own wedding.”
Lucas handed Emma to Claire.
Then he faced the woman he had almost married.
“You will leave after we determine why my daughter was locked inside that room.”
Vanessa looked toward the guests.
Phones had begun to rise.
Several people were recording.
Patricia spun toward them.
“Put those phones away.”
No one listened.
Lucas turned to the head of security.
“Close the estate gates.”
Vanessa stared at him.
“You cannot hold us here.”
“I am securing a possible crime scene.”
“A crime scene?”
Patricia laughed sharply.
“A frightened child told a story, and suddenly you think my daughter is a criminal.”
Emma began crying again.
Claire carried her into a nearby sitting room.
Lucas watched them disappear.
He had promised Emma that Vanessa would never replace her mother.
He had promised she would remain the center of his life.
Now he was standing beneath wedding flowers while his daughter trembled because he had failed to see what was happening inside his own home.
The female wedding coordinator led Vanessa into the bridal suite.
Claire returned moments later.
Lucas’s mother, Diane Bennett, joined them as a family witness.
Patricia entered on Vanessa’s side.
The doors closed.
Inside the suite, Vanessa stood before a wall of mirrors.
Her wedding gown filled the room.
The dress had a fitted lace bodice and a long satin skirt covered with hand-sewn pearls.
The coordinator examined the fabric near Vanessa’s left hip.
“There is an altered seam.”
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“The designer added a support panel.”
The coordinator touched the stitches.
“These were done by hand after the final fitting.”
Patricia moved toward the door.
“This is over.”
Claire locked it.
“No.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“You have always hated me.”
“I barely know you.”
“That never stopped you from interfering.”
Claire looked toward the altered seam.
“Open it.”
The coordinator used a small pair of embroidery scissors.
Vanessa suddenly reached for her wrist.
Diane stepped between them.
“Do not touch her.”
The first thread snapped.
Then the second.
The seam opened.
A thick cream envelope slid from between the layers of silk and fell onto the carpet.
No one spoke.
Claire picked it up.
The envelope was sealed with the blue emblem of Hartwell and Pierce Family Law.
Lucas’s attorney did not work for that firm.
Vanessa’s did.
Written across the front were four words.
EMMA BENNETT CUSTODY PETITION.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Claire opened the envelope.
The first document requested temporary guardianship of Emma.
The second authorized Emma’s transfer to a private residential school in Switzerland.
The third declared Lucas emotionally unstable and unable to manage his daughter’s inheritance.
At the bottom of each document was Lucas’s signature.
He had never signed them.
Claire’s hands began to shake.
“There is more.”
A financial transfer form authorized the movement of seventy-two million dollars from Emma’s trust into a private family investment account.
The account was controlled by Vanessa.
Diane covered her mouth.
Patricia said nothing.
Claire turned toward the bride.
“You were going to take her money.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“You do not understand those documents.”
“They are forged.”
“They were prepared for an emergency.”
“What emergency?”
Vanessa looked toward the closed door.
“The one Lucas does not know is coming.”
Before Claire could question her, a small black object fell from the torn seam.
It landed beside the envelope.
It was a digital voice recorder.
A red light blinked on its surface.
The recorder had been running during the entire confrontation.
It had also been running before the wedding.
Claire pressed the playback button.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“Once Lucas says the vows, the next part begins.”
A man answered her.
“And the child?”
May you like
Vanessa laughed.
“By Monday, Emma Bennett will be on a plane.”
