Chapter 7 - THE CHILD IN THE BLUE DRESS

Emma woke after sunset.
The estate had emptied.
Most guests had been questioned and released.
The flowers remained.
The candles had burned down.
The wedding cake stood untouched beneath the chandelier.
Emma walked into the hall holding Lucas’s hand.
She looked at the abandoned chairs.
“Are you still getting married?”
“No.”
“Because of me?”
Lucas stopped.
He crouched until they were eye level.
“The wedding stopped because Vanessa lied.”
“Did I ruin it?”
“You saved me.”
Emma looked toward the marble table.
The gold wedding ring remained where Lucas had placed it.
She picked it up.
“It is pretty.”
Lucas held out his hand.
Emma placed the ring in his palm.
“Are you sad?”
“Yes.”
“Do you still love her?”
Lucas answered honestly.
“I loved the person I thought she was.”
Emma thought about that.
“Was she pretending?”
“Yes.”
“Did you pretend too?”
The question surprised him.
“What do you mean?”
“You pretended not to see when she was mean.”
Lucas did not move.
Emma continued.
“She threw away the picture Mommy made.”
“She said it was old.”
“She told me not to sit beside you at dinner.”
“She said grown-up wives came before children.”
Lucas felt shame rise inside him.
“Why did you not tell me?”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“At the lake.”
Lucas remembered the weekend two months earlier.
Emma had begun crying during dinner.
She said Vanessa did not like her.
Vanessa claimed Emma was upset because she had been denied dessert.
Lucas told Emma to apologize for being rude.
He had not listened.
The memory became unbearable.
“I am sorry.”
Emma looked confused.
“For what?”
“For making you believe you had to prove you were scared.”
Her lower lip trembled.
“I thought you would be mad.”
“I am angry.”
Emma flinched.
Lucas immediately took her hands.
“Not at you.”
“I am angry at myself.”
He pulled her into his arms.
“I will never ask you to stay quiet to make an adult comfortable again.”
Claire watched from across the hall.
Diane stood beside her.
Both women were crying.
Detective Reyes approached Lucas.
“We found another section on the recorder.”
The audio captured Vanessa and Mercer discussing a location called Northpoint.
Reyes searched the name.
Northpoint Academy was a private psychiatric boarding facility in rural Switzerland.
The admission forms inside Vanessa’s dress listed Emma as emotionally disturbed.
The forms described violent behavior, hallucinations, and attachment problems.
None of it was true.
Vanessa planned to have Emma removed immediately after Lucas became sedated.
A private medical plane had been reserved for Monday morning.
The reservation used Patricia Caldwell’s foundation account.
Lucas turned toward Patricia.
She sat beneath the floral arch with a police officer beside her.
“You paid for the plane.”
Patricia wiped her eyes.
“I believed the school would help her.”
“Help her with what?”
“Vanessa said Emma was becoming dangerous.”
Lucas looked at his daughter in the blue dress.
Emma barely reached his waist.
“You believed my seven-year-old child was dangerous.”
Patricia’s voice weakened.
“I believed my daughter.”
“That is what I did.”
The admission silenced them both.
Patricia looked at Emma.
Regret crossed her face.
Then she glanced toward the security cameras.
Her fear returned.
“Vanessa will not forgive me for speaking.”
“Where is she?” Lucas asked.
Patricia shook her head.
“The police released her pending investigation.”
Lucas turned toward Reyes.
“She cannot leave the city.”
“We issued a travel restriction.”
Patricia laughed bitterly.
“Vanessa does not need an airport.”
She looked toward Lucas.
“Andrew Mercer owns a private airfield outside Palm Springs.”
At that moment, the estate alarm activated.
A black SUV had crashed through the rear service gate.
Security officers ran outside.
Lucas pulled Emma behind him.
The ballroom doors burst open.
Nathan stumbled inside.
Blood ran from a cut above his eye.
He carried a laptop against his chest.
“They took Vanessa.”
Lucas stared at him.
“Who?”
Nathan opened the laptop.
A live video appeared.
Vanessa sat inside a small aircraft beside Andrew Mercer.
She smiled directly into the camera.
Emma’s trust archive was open on a screen behind them.
Vanessa spoke calmly.
