Chapter 16 - THE TRIAL OF THE WHITE DRESS

The trial began nine months after the canceled wedding.

The white dress was displayed inside the courtroom.

It stood on a mannequin behind the prosecution table.

The torn seam remained open.

Jurors could see the hidden pockets stitched into the lining.

The dress became the physical center of the case.

It represented the entire conspiracy.

Beauty on the outside.

Documents, surveillance, and betrayal underneath.

Vanessa entered wearing a simple navy suit.

She did not look toward Lucas.

She looked directly at Emma.

Lucas immediately moved his chair, blocking the child from her view.

Emma was not required to testify in open court.

Her recorded forensic interview would be played instead.

Lucas had considered keeping her away from the trial.

Emma asked to attend the first day.

“I want to see that she cannot lock the door anymore.”

Lucas respected her decision.

The prosecution played the wedding recorder.

Vanessa’s voice filled the courtroom.

“By Monday, Emma Bennett will be on a plane.”

The jury watched the video of Vanessa locking the bathroom.

A second hallway camera had captured the moment from a distant angle.

Vanessa claimed she was closing the door to calm Emma.

The brass key in her hand proved otherwise.

Derek testified next.

He described the forged custody petition.

He described the plan to drug Lucas.

He admitted creating false audio files.

Vanessa’s attorney attacked his credibility.

Derek had accepted a reduced sentence.

He had every reason to lie.

Then Patricia testified.

She admitted funding the plane.

She admitted helping Vanessa contact Northpoint Academy.

She admitted hearing Vanessa say Emma would be easier to control once Lucas became medically incapacitated.

Vanessa stared at her mother with hatred.

Patricia began crying.

“I taught my daughter that love meant removing every consequence.”

“I was wrong.”

Vanessa’s attorney presented a different story.

He claimed Mercer manipulated Vanessa.

He claimed she believed Emma needed treatment.

He claimed the documents in the dress were placed there without her knowledge.

Then the prosecutor played the recording from the airfield.

Vanessa’s voice was clear.

“You said we were partners.”

She knew Mercer.

She knew the plan.

She knew Rachel’s archive existed.

The defense called Vanessa to the stand.

She spoke softly.

She described Lucas as distant.

She described Emma as jealous.

She claimed she spent a year trying to earn the child’s trust.

“Did you love Emma?” her attorney asked.

Vanessa looked toward the jury.

“I tried.”

The prosecutor approached.

“Did you tell Emma she would no longer be family?”

“No.”

“Did you lock her in the bathroom?”

“No.”

“Did you hide custody documents inside your dress?”

“No.”

“Did you plan to send her to Switzerland?”

“I believed the school could help her.”

“You just said you did not know about the documents.”

Vanessa paused.

The prosecutor walked toward the mannequin.

She opened the second hidden pocket.

“This memory card contains months of surveillance.”

“Why was it inside your dress?”

“Mercer put it there.”

“Why?”

“I do not know.”

The prosecutor held up the handwritten agreement found inside the wedding cake.

“Is this your signature?”

Vanessa looked at it.

“No.”

A handwriting expert had already confirmed it.

The prosecutor asked one final question.

“Why did you continue walking toward the altar after learning the plan allowed Dr. Mercer to kill Lucas?”

Vanessa’s face became still.

The courtroom waited.

She looked at Lucas.

Then she looked at Emma.

“Because I had already spent four years becoming Mrs. Bennett.”

The words were quiet.

They were also the first honest words she had spoken.
