Chapter 1 - THE KNOCK BEHIND THE DOOR

The wedding was seven minutes away from beginning.

Crystal chandeliers burned above the grand hall of the Bellamy Estate.

Three hundred guests sat beneath arches of white roses and candlelight.

A string quartet had already begun the opening music.

Lucas Bennett stood at the entrance to the aisle in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo.

A gold wedding band rested inside his jacket pocket.

At the far end of the hall, Vanessa Caldwell waited in a private bridal room.

She wore a custom white gown that had taken eight months to create.

Everything looked flawless.

There was only one person missing.

Lucas’s seven-year-old daughter, Emma.

She was supposed to walk down the aisle carrying a small basket of white petals.

Lucas assumed she was with his sister Claire.

Then he heard a weak knock from the hallway behind him.

At first, he thought it came from one of the service rooms.

The music nearly covered it.

Then the knock came again.

“Daddy.”

Lucas froze.

The voice was faint.

“Daddy, I’m scared.”

He ran toward the end of the hallway.

The sound led him to a private bathroom beside the bridal suite.

He grabbed the handle.

The door was locked from the outside with an antique brass key.

“Emma?”

“Daddy, please get me out.”

Lucas pulled the key from the lock and threw the door open.

Emma stood beside the sink in her pale blue flower-girl dress.

Her face was wet with tears.

Her small hands were trembling.

The moment she saw him, she ran into his arms.

Lucas dropped to his knees and held her tightly.

“Who locked you in here?”

Emma looked past him.

Vanessa had appeared at the other end of the hallway.

She stood in her wedding gown with her mother, Patricia Caldwell, beside her.

Guests began rising from their seats.

The quartet stopped playing.

Emma pointed toward Vanessa.

“She did.”

Vanessa’s expression did not change.

“Emma is confused.”

Lucas stood with his daughter in his arms.

“Why was the door locked?”

“I have no idea.”

Emma buried her face against her father’s shoulder.

“She said I wasn’t going to be family anymore.”

A stunned silence moved through the hall.

Vanessa gave a small laugh.

“That is ridiculous.”

Emma shook her head violently.

“She said after the wedding, you would send me away.”

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

The woman he had planned to marry stared back at him without blinking.

“Tell me she misunderstood.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Lucas, she has been anxious for weeks.”

“She does not want you to marry me.”

“She is trying to stop the ceremony.”

Emma lifted her head.

“I saw what you put in your dress.”

Vanessa’s face lost its color.

Patricia immediately reached for her daughter’s arm.

Lucas noticed.

“What did she put in the dress?”

Emma pointed toward the lower left side of Vanessa’s gown.

“She cut the inside and hid an envelope.”

Vanessa moved backward.

“There is nothing in my dress.”

Lucas reached into his jacket.

He removed the gold wedding band.

Then he placed it on a marble table beside the hallway.

“The ceremony is not beginning until we find out.”

Vanessa stared at the ring.

“You are humiliating me in front of everyone.”

Lucas tightened his hold around Emma.

“You locked my daughter in a bathroom.”

“I did not.”

“Then you have nothing to hide.”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the grand staircase.

For one second, Lucas saw something he had never seen in her before.

Fear.

Then Patricia stepped between them.

“No man is searching my daughter’s wedding dress.”

Claire Bennett appeared beside Lucas.

“We do not need a man.”

She looked toward the female wedding coordinator.

“We need a private room and two witnesses.”

Vanessa took another step backward.

The fabric near her left hip made a faint crackling sound.

Something stiff was hidden beneath the silk.

Emma heard it.

May you like

Lucas heard it.

Vanessa turned to run.
