Chapter 19 - THE LETTER FROM PRISON

Two years after the trial, Vanessa sent Emma a letter.

The prison counselor contacted Lucas first.

Vanessa had completed a program on accountability.

She claimed she wanted to apologize without requesting a response.

Lucas’s first instinct was to reject it.

Then he remembered Rachel’s message.

Family did not mean making every decision for a child.

It meant creating enough safety for the child to decide.

Emma was now ten.

Lucas told her about the letter.

“You do not have to read it.”

“Did you read it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“It is addressed to you.”

Emma thought for a long time.

“I want Maya there.”

Maya sat beside her when the envelope was opened.

Lucas remained across the room.

Emma read silently.

Vanessa admitted locking the bathroom.

She admitted planting false reports about Emma.

She admitted wanting Lucas’s money and social power.

She wrote that Emma’s love for her father made Vanessa feel threatened.

She had believed there was not enough room for both of them.

The final paragraph contained no excuses.

I told you that you would not be family anymore.

The truth is that I was never willing to understand what family meant.

You were not standing in my way.

I was trying to stand in yours.

I am sorry.

Emma folded the letter.

Lucas waited.

“How do you feel?”

“I do not know.”

“That is allowed.”

“Do I have to forgive her?”

“No.”

“Can I believe she is sorry without wanting her back?”

“Yes.”

Emma placed the letter inside the wooden box with the gold keys.

She did not write a response.

A month later, Lucas proposed to Maya.

He did not plan a public surprise.

He did not invite guests.

He did not buy a ring first.

He sat with Maya and Emma at the kitchen table.

“I want to ask Maya to marry me.”

Emma looked at him.

“Are you asking permission?”

“I am asking how you feel.”

Emma turned toward Maya.

“Will you lock me in a bathroom?”

Maya’s eyes filled with sadness.

“No.”

“Will you send me away?”

“No.”

“Will you throw away Mom’s things?”

“Never.”

“Will you get mad when Dad and I have dinner alone?”

“No.”

Emma looked back at Lucas.

“She can stay.”

Maya laughed through tears.

Lucas reached for the small ring box in his pocket.

Emma raised one finger.

“Wait.”

She went upstairs.

When she returned, she carried Rachel’s silver necklace.

She placed it in Maya’s hand.

“This does not make you my mom.”

“I know.”

“It means I trust you to help protect the truth.”

Maya closed her fingers around the pendant.

“That is more important than any title.”

Lucas proposed.

Maya said yes.

The wedding was planned for the garden of the Emma Rachel Center.

Only forty people were invited.

No cameras were allowed inside.

Emma chose her own dress.

She also chose to walk beside Lucas instead of in front of him.

“I am not giving you away,” she explained.

“I am making sure you reach the right person.”
