Chapter 8 - THE KEY RACHEL LEFT BEHIND

Lucas did not understand the demand.

He had never seen an access key for Emma’s trust archive.

Claire had not seen one either.

Rachel’s attorney had died the year before.

The trust documents stated that access required three elements.

Emma’s biometric authorization.

A physical token.

And a phrase selected by Rachel.

Vanessa and Mercer had somehow obtained the biometric file.

They had likely copied Emma’s fingerprints from a school medical form.

They had located the phrase inside Rachel’s private correspondence.

They were missing only the physical token.

“What does it look like?” Lucas asked.

Nathan opened the trust inventory.

The token was described only as a maternal keepsake.

Diane looked toward Emma.

“Rachel’s necklace.”

Emma wore a small silver pendant beneath her flower-girl dress.

Rachel had given it to her shortly before the accident.

Lucas had assumed it contained a photograph.

He had never opened it.

Emma touched the pendant.

“Mommy said I should keep it close.”

Lucas removed the necklace carefully.

The pendant opened from the side.

Inside was no photograph.

A thin gold chip rested beneath a tiny engraved message.

FOR EMMA, WHEN THE TRUTH IS SAFE.

The physical access token had been hanging around Emma’s neck for three years.

Vanessa lived in the same house.

She helped Emma dress for school.

She had countless opportunities to take it.

Yet she never did.

“Why would she wait until the wedding?” Claire asked.

Lucas looked toward Emma.

“Because after the vows, she would become part of the legal family.”

“If she took the necklace before marriage, she would look like an outsider stealing from a child.”

“After marriage, she could claim she was protecting family property.”

Vanessa’s plan depended on appearances.

A beautiful wedding.

A concerned stepmother.

A confused husband.

A troubled child.

Every part had been designed to look respectable.

Lucas placed the pendant inside a security case.

Detective Reyes contacted federal authorities.

The private airfield was placed under surveillance.

The aircraft had not taken off.

Mercer wanted the token before leaving.

Vanessa sent another message.

LUCAS COMES ALONE.

Emma read the screen.

“No.”

Lucas turned toward her.

“You should not be reading this.”

“You are not going alone.”

“I will be protected.”

“She lies.”

“I know.”

“She said Mommy’s truth will die.”

Lucas placed his hands on her shoulders.

“Your mother’s truth is not worth your father’s life.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears.

“That is what you say because you are scared.”

Lucas almost smiled despite the fear.

She sounded like Rachel.

Claire stepped forward.

“We can give them a duplicate.”

“The token has a unique circuit,” Nathan said.

“They will detect a copy.”

Emma looked at the pendant.

“What happens if they open the archive?”

Nathan answered carefully.

“It contains records your mother wanted protected.”

“Will it show what happened to her?”

“Possibly.”

Emma looked toward Lucas.

“Then use it.”

“No.”

“It is mine.”

The room became silent.

Lucas had spent the day realizing how many adults had taken choices away from Emma.

Now she was making the most dangerous choice of all.

“You are seven.”

“It still belongs to me.”

Lucas closed his eyes.

She was right legally.

She was right morally.

That did not mean he could allow her to become bait.

Detective Reyes proposed a controlled exchange.

Lucas would carry the real token.

The airfield would be surrounded from a distance.

Emma would remain at the estate.

Lucas agreed.

Before he left, Emma wrapped both arms around him.

“Do not drink anything.”

“I promise.”

“Do not believe Vanessa if she cries.”

“I promise.”

“And come back.”

Lucas held her tightly.

“That is the promise I intend to keep.”

At midnight, he arrived at the Mercer Airfield.

Vanessa stood beside the aircraft in a black coat over her wedding gown.

The lower left seam remained torn.

Andrew Mercer stood behind her with a gun.

Lucas held up the necklace.

Mercer smiled.

“Rachel always did hide the important things in plain sight.”

Lucas took one step closer.

“What did you do to her?”

Mercer’s smile disappeared.

“Give me the token.”

“What did you do to my wife?”

Vanessa opened the aircraft door.

“Lucas, this is not the time.”

“It is the only reason I came.”

Mercer raised the gun.

“Rachel discovered the trial data.”

“She threatened to expose me.”

“So you drugged her.”

“I asked her to reconsider.”

“You cut her brake line.”

Mercer said nothing.

Vanessa looked at him.

For the first time, she appeared uncertain.

Lucas understood.

Vanessa knew Mercer was involved in Rachel’s death.

May you like

She did not know he had personally caused it.

The alliance between them had just cracked.
