Chapter 15 - THE BRIDE’S MOTHER SPEAKS

Patricia Caldwell requested to meet Lucas.
Her attorney arranged the conversation inside the district attorney’s office.
Lucas almost refused.
Detective Reyes encouraged him to attend.
“Patricia knows more than she has admitted.”
Lucas entered the interview room alone.
Patricia wore a gray jail uniform.
Her hair was no longer styled.
Without the designer clothing and social confidence, she looked older.
She folded her hands on the table.
“How is Emma?”
“Safe.”
Patricia closed her eyes.
“I never wanted her harmed.”
“You funded the plane that would take her away.”
“I believed Vanessa.”
“You keep saying that as though belief removes responsibility.”
Patricia accepted the criticism.
“She told me Emma had threatened her.”
“She showed me recordings.”
“They were fake.”
“I know that now.”
“You saw the way Emma looked at her.”
“I saw what I wanted to see.”
Lucas understood the sentence.
He had done the same.
Patricia continued.
“Vanessa has always needed to win.”
“When she was a child, losing felt like humiliation.”
“I protected her from consequences.”
“I called teachers.”
“I blamed other children.”
“I paid people to remain silent.”
“And eventually she believed consequences were things that happened only to poorer families.”
Lucas looked at her.
“When did Mercer contact her?”
“Four years ago.”
“Before Rachel died?”
“Yes.”
Patricia revealed that Mercer met Vanessa at a medical foundation gala.
He told her Lucas Bennett would soon become one of the wealthiest widowers in California.
He described Lucas as lonely, loyal, and easy to guide through grief.
Vanessa initially refused.
Then Mercer showed her the value of Emma’s trust.
He promised her control of billions.
Patricia learned about the plan months later.
She tried to convince herself it was only a marriage arrangement.
She claimed she did not know Rachel would die.
“What did you know?”
Patricia’s lips trembled.
“I knew Andrew wanted Rachel frightened.”
“How?”
“He asked Vanessa to send anonymous messages.”
“What messages?”
Patricia looked down.
“They told Rachel that Emma would be taken from her.”
Lucas felt rage return.
Rachel had spent her final months believing someone was coming for her child.
Patricia had known.
She had remained silent.
“Why are you telling me now?”
“Because Vanessa blamed me.”
“She told prosecutors I created the plan.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
“But I helped her every time she crossed another line.”
Patricia began crying.
“I thought loyalty meant standing beside my daughter no matter what.”
Lucas’s voice remained cold.
“Loyalty without morality is participation.”
Patricia nodded.
“I know.”
She slid a folded note across the table.
“Vanessa wrote this in the hospital.”
Lucas opened it.
The note was addressed to Emma.
It began with an apology.
Then the language changed.
Vanessa claimed Emma had misunderstood everything.
She claimed Lucas had manipulated the child.
She asked Emma to remember their vacations and birthday parties.
She promised that when the adults stopped being angry, they could become a family again.
Lucas pushed the letter back.
“That is not an apology.”
“No.”
“It is another attempt to control her memory.”
Patricia stared at the table.
“What will you do with it?”
“Nothing.”
“I will not let Vanessa place another lie inside my daughter’s mind.”
He stood.
Patricia spoke before he reached the door.
“Lucas.”
He turned.
“Vanessa hid one more document at the Bellamy Estate.”
“What document?”
“A copy of Rachel’s original trust amendment.”
“Where?”
“In the wedding cake.”
Lucas stared at her.
Patricia explained that Vanessa did not trust Mercer.
She planned to keep evidence against him in case he betrayed her.
A waterproof tube had been placed inside the decorative center of the cake.
The cake was still at the abandoned estate.
Lucas called Detective Reyes.
They returned to the grand hall.
The roses had wilted.
Dust covered the chairs.
The cake remained beneath its glass display.
A forensic team cut through the top tier.
Inside the center column was a sealed metal tube.
The tube contained Rachel’s trust amendment.
It also contained a handwritten agreement between Vanessa and Mercer.
The agreement divided Emma’s assets after the wedding.
Vanessa would receive sixty percent.
Mercer would receive forty.
At the bottom was a final clause.
If Lucas died before the transfer, Vanessa would inherit his estate as his legal wife.
The sedative in the champagne had been presented as temporary.
The written plan allowed Mercer to increase the dose if necessary.

Vanessa knew Lucas might die.
She had walked toward the altar anyway.
