Chapter 17 - THE VERDICT AFTER MIDNIGHT

The jury deliberated for fourteen hours.

Emma waited at home with Claire and Diane.

Lucas remained at the courthouse.

He did not want Emma to sit through the uncertainty.

At 11:43 p.m., the jury returned.

Vanessa stood beside her attorney.

She was found guilty of conspiracy to commit fraud.

Guilty of attempted kidnapping.

Guilty of child endangerment.

Guilty of attempted poisoning.

Guilty of forgery.

Guilty of obstruction.

The jury also convicted her of participating in the conspiracy connected to Rachel’s death.

Mercer received a separate federal conviction for murder, medical fraud, kidnapping, and attempted murder.

Derek received twelve years after cooperating.

Patricia received a reduced sentence because of her testimony.

Her foundation assets were seized.

The court ordered them transferred to organizations serving children affected by financial exploitation.

Vanessa showed no emotion as the verdicts were read.

Then the judge discussed Emma.

He described the harm caused by telling a child she could be removed from her own family.

He described the false psychiatric reports.

He described the locked bathroom.

Vanessa finally lowered her head.

Before deputies took her away, she asked to speak.

The judge allowed one statement.

Vanessa turned toward Lucas.

“You made me believe I had a place.”

Lucas answered from his seat.

“You had a place.”

“You wanted Emma’s place instead.”

Vanessa looked toward the courtroom doors.

Emma was not there.

For the first time, Vanessa had no child available to frighten.

No wedding audience to impress.

No mother to excuse her.

No doctor to create another lie.

She was led away alone.

Lucas drove home after midnight.

The house was dark except for the kitchen.

Emma sat at the table in pajamas.

A plate of untouched cookies rested in front of her.

“You should be asleep.”

“I wanted to know.”

Lucas sat across from her.

“She was convicted.”

“Is she coming back?”

“No.”

“Ever?”

“Not into our lives.”

Emma looked at the cookies.

“Did she say sorry?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Some people believe an apology makes them smaller.”

“Does it?”

“No.”

“It makes room for the truth.”

Emma pushed the plate toward him.

“I saved you one.”

Lucas took a cookie.

It was shaped like a star.

Emma had covered it with too much frosting.

He ate it anyway.

“What happens now?” she asked.

“We live.”

“That is all?”

“That is a lot.”

Emma smiled.

Then she looked toward his left hand.

The ring finger remained empty.

“Where is the wedding ring?”

“In a drawer.”

“Are you keeping it?”

Lucas thought about the gold band on the marble table.

It belonged to a promise he had almost made to the wrong person.

“No.”

“What will you do with it?”

“I do not know yet.”

Emma considered this.

“Turn it into something honest.”

Lucas looked at her.

“What does that mean?”

“I do not know.”

“I am seven.”

He laughed for the first time in months.

The following week, Lucas took the ring to a jeweler.

He did not sell it.

He had it melted down.

The gold became two small keys.

One belonged to Emma.

One remained with Lucas.

They opened a wooden box containing Rachel’s final video, Emma’s necklace, and every document that proved the truth.
