Chapter 3 - THE WEDDING THAT NEVER BEGAN

Claire opened the bridal suite doors.
Lucas saw the envelope in her hand.
He saw the recorder.
Then he saw Vanessa standing motionless behind her.
“What did you find?”
Claire handed him the custody petition.
Lucas read the first page.
His eyes stopped at the forged signature.
He turned to the second page.
Then the third.
The grand hall had become completely silent.
Lucas lifted the papers.
“You planned to send Emma out of the country.”
Vanessa emerged from the suite.
“You are reading legal drafts without context.”
“My signature is on them.”
“Your assistant provided samples.”
Lucas looked toward Nathan Cole, his chief of staff.
Nathan stood near the front row.
His face changed.
Lucas noticed.
“You gave her my signature?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
Vanessa answered too quickly.
“He did not know why I needed it.”
Nathan stared at her.
“You told me the wedding insurance company required it.”
Lucas walked toward him.
“Did you send her files containing my signature?”
Nathan swallowed.
“Yes.”
The guests began whispering.
Lucas turned back to Vanessa.
“You used my employee to forge custody documents.”
“They were never filed.”
“You hid them inside your wedding dress.”
“I was protecting our future.”
“There is no future.”
Vanessa’s expression cracked.
“You do not mean that.”
Lucas looked toward the gold ring on the marble table.
“I removed the ring before I knew what was in that envelope.”
“Because a child made an accusation.”
“Because my daughter was locked in a room.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Emma has been trying to separate us.”
“She cries every time we discuss the wedding.”
“She destroyed the seating chart.”
“She told her teacher she wanted me to disappear.”
Lucas lowered his voice.
“She is seven.”
“She is manipulative.”
The word echoed through the hall.
Diane Bennett looked at Vanessa with disgust.
“She is a grieving child.”
Vanessa turned toward Lucas.
“You promised I would be your wife.”
“I also promised Emma she would always be safe.”
“You cannot let one emotional moment destroy everything we built.”
Lucas held up the recorder.
“Your own voice destroyed it.”
Patricia pushed forward.
“That recording can be edited.”
“It was recovered from your daughter’s dress.”
“You have no proof Vanessa locked the bathroom.”
A small voice came from the sitting room.
“I saw her take the key.”
Emma stood beside the doorway.
Claire had told her to remain inside.
She had come out when she heard Vanessa call her manipulative.
Lucas went to her immediately.
Emma held a folded white ribbon in one hand.
Vanessa’s initials were embroidered into it.
“I pulled this off her dress when she pushed me inside.”
Vanessa looked down.
A matching ribbon was missing from the right sleeve of her gown.
Camera flashes began exploding across the room.
Lucas ordered security to remove every guest from the hall.
No one was allowed to leave with photographs until law enforcement arrived.
The wedding coordinator called the police.
Vanessa’s composure vanished.
“You called the police on your own fiancée?”
“You stopped being my fiancée the moment you threatened my daughter.”
Patricia grabbed Vanessa’s hand.
“We are leaving.”
The security chief blocked the staircase.
Lucas looked toward Nathan.
“Take Emma and Claire to the library.”
Emma tightened her arms around his neck.
“No.”
Lucas crouched.
“I will be right behind you.”
“She said you would choose her.”
“I am choosing you.”
The words steadied the child.
Claire led her away.
Vanessa watched them go.
Then she smiled strangely.
“You think canceling the wedding saves her.”
Lucas turned.
Vanessa’s voice dropped.
“You have no idea what you already signed.”
Nathan suddenly reached inside his jacket.
Security officers moved toward him.
He pulled out a white folder.
“I need to show Lucas something.”
His hands were trembling.
“I signed a document this morning.”
Lucas took the folder.
It was an authorization allowing Vanessa to act on his behalf during a medical emergency.
Nathan had notarized it.
The document activated at midnight.
Lucas checked his watch.
It was 11:47 a.m.

Vanessa had not planned to wait for midnight.
Her plan required Lucas to experience a medical emergency before the wedding reception ended.
