Chapter 6 - The Estate Under Lockdown
Police arrived before midnight.
Vanessa, Richard, and Mrs. Hale were separated.
The ballroom was photographed exactly as it remained after the attack.
The torn book.
The broken puzzle.
The crushed rabbit.
The damaged blanket.
Investigators treated the gifts as evidence because they established motive, behavior, and the moment Vanessa lost control.
Claire gave a statement.
She described the pantry conversation, the missing drawing, and the threats she heard near Nathan’s study.
Lily was not formally questioned that night.
A child specialist allowed her to explain only why her hand hurt.
Nathan remained nearby but did not enter the interview unless Lily asked for him.
She did.
“Mr. Nate can sit by the door.”
He sat on the floor outside the room.
The billionaire who commanded boardrooms remained exactly where a three-year-old permitted him to be.
At dawn, police arrested Vanessa for assault, evidence tampering, conspiracy, and theft.
Richard was arrested for financial crimes and questioned about Caroline’s death.
Mrs. Hale was charged with conspiracy and possession of stolen property.
Thomas Bell remained missing.
Nathan’s attorneys warned that the scandal would damage Whitfield Holdings.
Shareholders would question his judgment.
Reporters would describe Claire as the woman who broke the engagement.
Nathan refused to hide her.
“She did not break anything.”
“Vanessa did.”
Claire heard him.
“Mr. Whitfield, I do not want my daughter’s name in the news.”
“It will not be.”
“My legal team will protect both of you.”
Claire looked toward the police cars.
“You cannot promise protection from every person with a camera.”
Nathan accepted the correction.
“No.”
“But I can refuse to use you as part of my defense.”
The distinction mattered.
That morning, Claire resigned.
Nathan looked stunned.
“I cannot keep Lily here while this house becomes the center of an investigation.”
“You have every right.”
“I will pay your salary during the transition.”
“No.”
“You have done enough.”
Nathan wanted to argue.
Instead, he asked what she needed.
“A reference.”
“A safe week to move.”
“And the truth when police ask about Caroline.”
He nodded.
“You will have all three.”
