Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Defense
Vanessa’s attorneys built their defense around love.
They claimed she believed Caroline’s presence would destroy Nathan.
They described her visits to Vermont as attempts to protect a grieving man.
They said the financial transfers were family pressure.
They called the birthday incident an emotional breakdown.
The prosecution played the ballroom footage.
Vanessa smiled while tearing the blanket.
She stepped on the rabbit.
She said people needed to remember where they belonged.
Love did not appear anywhere in the recording.
Only entitlement.
Claire testified about the pantry threat and the photographs.
Vanessa’s attorney asked whether Claire had romantic feelings for Nathan.
Claire looked toward the jury.
“My feelings have nothing to do with whether Vanessa harmed my child.”
“Did you hope Nathan would end the engagement?”
“I hoped my daughter would stop being punished for existing.”
The attorney pressed.
“Did you encourage Lily’s attachment to him?”
“No.”
“Children become attached to adults who listen.”
The sentence remained in the courtroom after she sat down.
Caroline testified through recorded deposition.
She described Vanessa entering her room.
“You are legally dead,” Vanessa told her.
“Nathan belongs to a future that has no place for you.”
Vanessa denied saying it.
The facility’s hidden nursing camera had captured the conversation.
Thomas testified against the Hales and William.
He admitted arranging the crash.
He admitted moving Caroline.
He admitted stealing sixty-two million dollars.
His cooperation reduced but did not remove a life sentence.
William pleaded guilty to financial conspiracy and attempted corporate takeover.
Richard refused every agreement.
He believed his name would protect him until the verdict.
It did not.
The jury convicted Vanessa of assault, conspiracy, fraud, theft, evidence fabrication, and participation in Caroline’s unlawful confinement.
She received thirty-one years.
Richard received multiple life sentences.
Mrs. Hale received twelve years after cooperation.
Thomas received forty-five years.
William received twenty-four.
Paul Crane, the corrupt investigator, received eighteen.
Nathan listened to every sentence without satisfaction.
