Chapter 19 - Caroline’s New Painting

Caroline completed a large painting ten years after the accident.
It showed a wet highway disappearing into darkness.
Along the roadside, white flowers pushed through broken concrete.
She titled it After Winter.
The painting was displayed at Lily House.
Nathan stood beside Caroline at the opening.
“You once dreamed of naming Emma after flowers,” he said.
Caroline nodded.
“I thought beauty could protect her.”
“It could not.”
“No.”
“But remembering her changed what we built afterward.”
Nathan looked toward the children in the gallery.
Emma’s life remained short.
Her influence did not.
Caroline had chosen not to remarry.
She had friendships, work, and a small home filled with color.
Nathan and Claire never treated that choice as loneliness.
One evening, Lily asked Caroline whether Emma would have liked her.
Caroline smiled.
“She would have been jealous of your blanket.”
Lily looked worried.
“I would share.”
“I know.”
The repaired blanket eventually became too small to wrap around Lily.
She folded it across the end of her bed.
The seam remained visible.
She refused every suggestion to replace it.
At twelve, Lily began volunteering at the residential center.
She organized birthday tables for children arriving with nothing.
No luxury chandeliers.
No press.
No adults deciding which child belonged.

Every gift came with the child’s name.
Every door remained open.
