Chapter 13 - Caroline’s Decision
Caroline spent nearly a year in rehabilitation.
Her memory returned unevenly.
Some days, she remembered the accident clearly.
Other days, she forgot Nathan had found her.
She never forgot Emma.
Nathan visited only when invited.
He brought no lawyers.
No company updates.
No expectations.
One afternoon, Caroline asked for divorce papers.
Nathan felt the old grief reopen.
He did not argue.
“I loved the man you were before the accident,” she said.
“I may love parts of the man you are now.”
“But I do not want my future decided by my past.”
Nathan signed.
Caroline retained her shares in the family foundation.
She used them to create a legal fund for people trapped in fraudulent guardianships.
The divorce remained private until both were ready to speak.
Reporters assumed Nathan would return to Claire immediately.
He did not.
Claire had been his employee.
Her daughter loved him.
She had lost work and privacy because of his household.
Any romantic pursuit while she remained vulnerable would turn kindness into pressure.
He sent birthday cards to Lily through Claire’s attorney.
He attended public events only when invited.
He helped repair the damaged hotel where Claire worked after a storm, but the contract went through an open bid.
Claire noticed the care he took not to own any part of her life.
Lily turned four in a public park.
There were balloons, cupcakes, and six children from preschool.
Nathan came for thirty minutes.
He gave Lily a packet of sunflower seeds.
“No giant present?” she asked.
He smiled.
“You already have too many things from me.”
“These grow.”
“Only if you take care of them.”
Lily handed him one seed.
“You take one.”
They planted it near the park fence.
Claire watched Nathan press soil over the seed.
He stood afterward.
“I should go.”
“You can stay for cake,” she said.
It was the first invitation that came from her rather than Lily.
Nathan stayed.
