Chapter 3 - The Dressing Suite

Security found three suitcases inside Vanessa’s private suite.
They were not packed with clothing.
They contained jewelry, company documents, and cash.
Several pieces belonged to Caroline.
Nathan had kept his late wife’s belongings inside a locked family vault.
Vanessa had insisted she never entered it.
One suitcase held Caroline’s diamond necklace.
Another held legal agreements bearing Nathan’s copied signature.
The third contained photographs of Claire and Lily.
Some had been taken through the staff-room window.
Others showed Claire leaving Lily’s preschool.
Nathan examined each picture without speaking.
Claire felt the room tilt.
“Why was she watching us?”
Mr. Harris opened a black folder.
Inside was a completed termination agreement for Claire.
The reason listed was theft from the Whitfield family.
Attached were photographs of Caroline’s jewelry hidden inside Claire’s locker.
The jewelry had not been found there yet.
The plan had not reached that stage.
Vanessa intended to place it later.
A second document requested a restraining order preventing Claire from approaching Nathan or the estate.
A third accused her of using Lily to manipulate him emotionally.
Nathan looked toward Vanessa.
“You were going to frame Claire.”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“I was protecting you.”
“From a housekeeper?”
“From a woman who knows exactly what she is doing.”
Claire stepped backward.
“I never asked Mr. Whitfield for anything.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You brought your daughter into his study.”
“She climbed into his grief.”
“She made him feel needed.”
Claire’s voice shook.
“She was looking for a dinosaur.”
Nathan turned toward security.
“Escort Lily and Claire to the east sitting room.”
Claire did not move.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She tightened her arms around Lily.
“I have spent two years leaving rooms whenever wealthy people decided I should not hear what was being said about me.”
“I am staying.”
Nathan studied her.
Then he nodded.
“You are right.”
Vanessa’s mother crossed the ballroom.
“This has gone far enough.”
Nathan opened the forged termination agreement.
“Your daughter planned to accuse an employee of theft.”
“She photographed a three-year-old without permission.”
“She removed property from my family vault.”
Mrs. Hale looked at Vanessa.
The glance was not shock.
It was warning.
Nathan saw it.
“So you knew.”
Richard Hale stepped between them.
“You are making accusations based on planted evidence.”
Nathan turned toward the ceiling camera.
“The dressing suite has independent security coverage.”
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
She had ordered the visible camera covered during preparations.
She did not know the mirrored light fixture contained another lens.
Mr. Harris played the footage.
Vanessa entered the family vault using Nathan’s copied access card.
Her mother carried the suitcases.
Richard Hale stood at the door.
All three had participated.
Then another figure appeared in the recording.
