Chapter 17 - What Belonging Means
Nathan proposed to Claire three years after the night Vanessa destroyed the gifts.
He did not use Caroline’s ring.
He did not propose at the mansion.
He did not involve reporters, guests, or employees.
They were planting sunflowers in Claire’s community garden.
Lily was chasing a ladybug nearby.
Nathan sat back on his heels.
“I have a question.”
Claire looked at the dirt on his sleeves.
“You own gardening clothes now.”
“I am growing.”
“Slowly.”
He took out a simple ring.
“I do not want you to belong to my house.”
“My name.”
“Or my world.”
“I want to build a life where neither of us has to earn a place by becoming smaller.”
Claire began crying.
Nathan waited.
He did not mistake tears for an answer.
“Ask me again,” she said.
He repeated the question.
Claire said yes.
Lily ran over.
“Are you getting married?”
Claire laughed.
“How did you know?”
“Mr. Nate is holding the tiny box.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Would that be okay with you?”
Lily thought carefully.
“Will Mommy still be Mommy?”
“Yes.”
“Will I still have my room?”
“Yes.”
“Can Miss Flowers come?”
“If she wants.”
“Then okay.”
Caroline attended the wedding.
She stood beside Claire before the ceremony.
The two women held hands.
There was no dramatic public blessing.
Only respect built through truth.
Claire’s cooperative catered part of the event and refused Nathan’s attempt to overpay.
The wedding took place in the art center garden.
Lily carried the rings inside the repaired blanket.
Nathan wore the crooked yellow star sticker inside his jacket.
Caroline noticed.
