Chapter 2 - Every Door Closed

The ballroom doors locked with a series of quiet electronic clicks.

The sound traveled around the room.

Guests glanced toward one another.

Vanessa’s confidence faltered.

“Nathan, open the doors.”

“No one leaves until the evidence is preserved.”

“Evidence?”

“You destroyed a child’s property in front of three hundred witnesses.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“A few toys.”

Claire lifted Lily into her arms.

Her daughter pressed her wet face against Claire’s shoulder.

Nathan turned toward the orchestra.

“Please stop playing.”

The violin fell silent.

He addressed the room.

“My apologies.”

“This evening is no longer an engagement celebration.”

Vanessa’s father, Richard Hale, stepped forward.

He was a tall man with silver hair and the practiced authority of someone who had escaped consequences his entire life.

“This is a private family disagreement.”

Nathan looked at him.

“The child is bleeding.”

Claire looked down.

A broken puzzle piece had cut Lily’s palm.

It was small, but bright red blood marked the white dress.

Nathan’s expression changed.

Security called the estate physician.

Vanessa attempted to take Nathan’s arm.

He moved away.

“You are humiliating me.”

“You chose an audience.”

Ashley Hale, Vanessa’s younger sister, whispered urgently to their mother.

Mrs. Hale began deleting something from her phone.

Nathan noticed.

“Mr. Harris.”

“Collect every phone used to record the incident.”

Richard Hale laughed.

“You cannot seize private property.”

“No.”

“But guests may voluntarily preserve evidence.”

“And anyone who deletes relevant material after receiving notice may explain that decision to my attorneys.”

Several guests immediately began uploading videos.

A senator’s wife sent hers to Nathan’s legal team.

A banker handed his phone to security.

Vanessa looked around the ballroom and realized the people she expected to protect her were protecting themselves.

Nathan approached Claire.

“May I see Lily’s hand?”

Claire nodded.

He crouched slowly so Lily could see him.

“I am sorry.”

Lily looked at the torn blanket.

“Did I do something bad?”

Nathan closed his eyes for one second.

“No.”

“You did nothing wrong.”

“Why did Miss Vanessa break my cloud?”

Nathan looked toward his fiancée.

“Because some adults destroy things when they cannot control what those things mean.”

Vanessa’s mouth tightened.

“You are ending our engagement over a maid’s child.”

Nathan removed the ring from Vanessa’s finger himself.

“No.”

“I am ending it because you revealed what you become when you believe someone has less power than you.”

Then Mr. Harris received a message through his earpiece.

He crossed the room quickly.

“Mr. Whitfield, we found something in Miss Hale’s dressing suite.”

May you like

Nathan looked at Vanessa.

For the first time, she appeared truly afraid.
