Chapter 1 - The Pink Table

“For me?” Lily whispered.

Claire forced a smile.

“For you, sweetheart.”

The pink table stood beneath the largest chandelier in the ballroom.

Three carefully wrapped gifts rested beside a small cake covered with sugar flowers.

Nathan waited near the table.

He had removed his black jacket and rolled up his sleeves because Lily once told him fancy clothes made birthday hugs difficult.

When she ran toward him, Nathan lowered himself to one knee.

“Happy birthday, Lily.”

She threw both arms around his neck.

The room went strangely quiet.

Claire saw Vanessa watching from beside the orchestra.

The emerald gown shimmered when she moved.

Her smile did not.

Nathan handed Lily the first package.

Inside was a wooden puzzle shaped like a garden.

Every piece had her name painted on the back.

Lily gasped.

“It has frogs.”

“Three frogs,” Nathan said.

“Because you are three.”

The second gift was a picture book.

A handwritten message appeared inside the cover.

For Lily, who brought sunlight back into a quiet house.

Claire read the sentence over her daughter’s shoulder.

Her throat tightened.

Then Lily opened the final package.

The pink blanket was soft, handmade, and embroidered with tiny white flowers.

Nathan touched one corner carefully.

“My wife began making this before our daughter was born.”

Claire looked up sharply.

Nathan had never spoken about Caroline’s belongings in public.

“She never finished it,” he continued.

“I asked her mother to complete it for you.”

Lily wrapped the blanket around herself.

“Mr. Nate, it feels like a cloud.”

Nathan smiled.

Then Vanessa crossed the ballroom.

“What a touching performance.”

Nathan stood.

“Vanessa.”

She looked from Lily to the blanket.

“You gave Caroline’s baby blanket to the housekeeper’s child?”

“It was mine to give.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice rose.

“That belonged to your daughter.”

Nathan’s face became still.

“Do not speak about Emma as though you knew her.”

Three hundred guests stopped pretending not to listen.

Vanessa seized the blanket.

Lily clung to it.

The fabric tore between them.

The sound was small.

Lily stared at the ripped flowers.

Then Vanessa swept the puzzle from the table.

Wooden pieces broke across the marble.

She tore the picture book from its spine and stepped on the stuffed rabbit.

“People need to remember where they belong,” she said.

Lily began crying.

Claire dropped beside her.

Nathan did not shout.

He set down his champagne glass.

Then he looked toward the head of security.

“Mr. Harris.”

A broad-shouldered man near the doors straightened.

Nathan’s voice remained calm.

“Close every exit.”

Vanessa laughed once.

“You cannot be serious.”

May you like

Nathan looked at the glowing red light above the ballroom camera.

“I have never been more serious.”
