Chapter 15 - The First Honest Dinner

Nathan invited Claire to dinner two years after the ballroom incident.
Not at the mansion.
Not at an exclusive restaurant.
At a quiet café near her apartment.
He asked Lily’s babysitter to contact Claire directly so no arrangement passed through him.
Claire arrived wearing a navy dress.
Nathan stood when she approached.
“You look terrified,” she said.
“I negotiate international shipping disputes without notes.”
“This feels less predictable.”
“Good.”
They spoke about ordinary things first.
Claire’s cooperative.
Nathan’s decision to divide Whitfield Holdings’ voting power among employees and independent directors.
Lily’s refusal to eat carrots unless they were called orange sticks.
Then Nathan became serious.
“I care about you.”
“I have for a long time.”
Claire held his gaze.
“I cannot live inside your gratitude.”
“I know.”
“I will not become the woman who healed a billionaire.”
“I know.”
“I have a business.”
“A child.”
“My own apartment.”
“I do not want rescuing.”
Nathan nodded.
“I am not asking you to surrender any of those things.”
“What are you asking?”
“For permission to know you outside the estate.”
Claire considered him.
“You may ask me to dinner again.”
Nathan smiled.
“That sounds promising.”
“It is not a contract.”
“Better.”
Their relationship grew slowly.
Lily remained the center of Claire’s decisions, but she was not used as a messenger between adults.
Nathan did not sleep at Claire’s apartment for months.
He did not give Lily expensive gifts.
He attended preschool events only when Claire and Lily both wanted him there.
When newspapers discovered the relationship, they called Claire a former maid who captured a billionaire.
Claire issued one statement.
“I was never invisible because my work lacked value.”
“People chose not to see it.”

Nathan said nothing publicly.
He understood the story belonged to her.
