Chapter 5 - Caroline’s Accident

Nathan became motionless.
“What old footage?”
Claire lowered her voice.
“I don’t know.”
“I was cleaning the hall.”
“They stopped speaking when they saw me.”
Vanessa had followed her afterward.
She accused Claire of listening at doors.
That night, Lily’s staff-room key disappeared.
Claire thought she had misplaced it.
Now the missing key felt different.
Nathan ordered a complete search of the estate archives.
Caroline’s accident had occurred six years earlier.
She and baby Emma were returning from a pediatric appointment on a rainy afternoon.
Their vehicle left the highway and struck a concrete barrier.
The police report blamed hydroplaning.
The car’s internal camera had supposedly been destroyed.
Whitfield security maintained a separate roadside backup network for executive vehicles.
Nathan had been told the server failed that day.
Thomas Bell supervised the system review.
At 2:14 in the morning, technicians recovered a corrupted file.
The video showed Caroline driving carefully.
A black SUV followed her.
The SUV struck the rear side of her car twice.
Caroline lost control.
The vehicle crossed the median.
The license plate belonged to a company once owned by Richard Hale.
Nathan watched without moving.
Vanessa stood under guard near the ballroom fireplace.
“You knew.”
She shook her head.
“My father handled old transportation contracts.”
“That is not an answer.”
Richard demanded an attorney.
Mrs. Hale began crying.
Vanessa stared at the screen.
Then she said something worse than denial.
“You were never supposed to find that.”
Nathan’s face lost all color.
The Hales had known Caroline’s accident was not accidental.
Thomas had erased the footage.
Why?
The answer appeared inside old financial records.
Caroline had discovered that Richard Hale and Thomas Bell were laundering money through Whitfield charitable foundations.
She planned to tell Nathan.
Two days later, she died.
The affair between Vanessa and Thomas began after the crash.
Vanessa entered Nathan’s life eight months later at a foundation dinner.
Their meeting had been arranged.
Her affection had been another stage of the cover-up.
Nathan turned toward Mr. Harris.
“Call the state police.”
“Tell them we have evidence connected to two deaths.”
Claire covered Lily’s ears.
Nathan noticed and lowered his voice.
Vanessa suddenly ran toward the terrace.
The doors remained locked.
She struck the glass with both hands.
“You cannot send me to prison.”
Nathan looked at the broken birthday gifts scattered behind her.
May you like
“You believed a child’s tears were proof of your importance.”
“Now they are evidence of your character.”
