Chapter 18 - Vanessa’s Final Letter
Vanessa sent Nathan a letter from prison.
She wrote that Claire had taken the life intended for her.
She accused Nathan of humiliating the Hale family.
She called Lily manipulative.
She claimed the birthday gifts had been symbols of an emotional affair.
Nathan did not respond.
He gave the letter to his attorney.
Claire asked whether he wanted to read it again.
“No.”
“Does that feel cruel?”
“No.”
“It feels finished.”
Vanessa later appealed her conviction.
The appeal failed.
Richard died in prison.
Mrs. Hale completed part of her sentence and entered a supervised residence.
William remained incarcerated.
Thomas Bell’s offshore accounts funded restitution for Caroline, Claire, and other victims of his financial schemes.
Nathan never recovered every stolen dollar.
He stopped measuring justice through recovery.
Claire used part of Aaron’s settlement to expand the cooperative.
It became a regional employee-owned company.
Former housekeepers, caregivers, and cleaners gained health insurance, retirement accounts, and legal support.
Lily grew up around people whose names were known.
At age seven, she asked why Vanessa hated her birthday.
Claire answered carefully.
“She thought kindness was something only certain people deserved.”
“Did she think we were poor?”
“Yes.”
“We were.”
“That does not mean you deserved less.”
Lily looked toward Nathan.
“He was sad-rich.”
Nathan laughed.
“That sounds accurate.”
Caroline added:
“And Vanessa was frightened-rich.”
Claire asked what Lily believed she was.
Lily wrapped the old pink blanket around her shoulders.
