Chapter 8 – The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody spoke after Evelyn said the name.

The silence was heavier than the explosion.

Marcus stared at her.

"Say it again."

Evelyn looked at the recording device sitting on the table.

Her expression was unreadable.

"Victoria Hale."

The name alone changed the atmosphere.

Everyone in the room knew who she was.

Victoria Hale had been one of the most respected intelligence officers in the federal system.

Brilliant.

Ruthless.

Impossible to manipulate.

She was the person who trained Evelyn.

The person who taught her how to survive.

The person who taught her how to recognize betrayal.

And six months ago...

She died.

Or at least everyone thought she did.

Marcus slowly shook his head.

"That can't be her."

Evelyn looked at him.

"You heard the recording."

"Voices can be copied."

"Not like that."

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Evelyn stared at the device.

"Victoria had a specific way of speaking."

A pause.

"She paused before important words."

"She lowered her voice when she was lying."

"She tapped her fingers when she was thinking."

Marcus watched her carefully.

"And you heard all of that?"

Evelyn nodded.

"Yes."

Her voice became quieter.

"That was her."

Grant stepped forward.

"Who is Victoria Hale?"

Evelyn looked at him.

The question almost offended her.

Because Grant had spent years beside her.

And he still didn't know.

"She was the woman who saved my life."

A pause.

"And the woman who may have destroyed it."

The room fell silent.

Marcus picked up the recording device.

"We need to verify the audio."

"You won't find anything."

"Why?"

"Because if Victoria is alive..."

Evelyn looked toward the dark windows.

"She planned this."

Marcus understood.

Someone like Victoria Hale didn't leave evidence behind.

She created mysteries.

Not mistakes.

Then suddenly, one of the agents rushed into the room.

"Director Hayes."

Marcus turned.

"What?"

"We found something in the mansion security system."

"Show me."

The agent connected a laptop.

A video appeared.

The timestamp was from the night before Evelyn returned.

The footage showed the hallway outside Lily's bedroom.

Everyone watched.

At first, nothing happened.

Then...

The door opened.

Vanessa walked out.

She looked around.

Then she placed something under the floorboard.

Evelyn's eyes narrowed.

"Pause."

The video froze.

"Zoom in."

The image sharpened.

Vanessa wasn't hiding something.

She was removing something.

A small device.

The same type of device found in Lily's room.

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

"Why?"

Vanessa remained silent.

Evelyn turned.

"You knew."

Vanessa looked away.

"Not everything."

"But enough."

Vanessa's eyes filled with fear.

"You don't understand."

"No."

Evelyn stepped closer.

"You don't understand."

"You came into my house."

"You hurt my daughter."

"You slept with my husband."

"Then you secretly planted surveillance devices."

Her voice lowered.

"So explain why I shouldn't believe you are part of this."

Vanessa looked at Grant.

Then at Evelyn.

"Because I was trying to protect her."

Everyone froze.

Evelyn laughed once.

Bitterly.

"You?"

"Protect Lily?"

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes."

"By pretending to be my husband's replacement?"

"I didn't choose that."

"Then why?"

Vanessa hesitated.

Finally she whispered:

"Because Blackridge told me if I didn't get close to Grant..."

"They would kill him."

Grant stared.

"What?"

Vanessa looked at him.

"I was never here because I wanted your marriage."

The room went quiet.

"I was here because I was watching you."

Evelyn narrowed her eyes.

"Watching me for who?"

Vanessa didn't answer.

Because she didn't need to.

Everyone already knew.

Victoria Hale.

The woman who was supposed to be dead.

Marcus received another alert.

He checked his phone.

His face changed.

"What?"

Evelyn asked.

Marcus looked at the screen.

"There's been a security breach."

"Where?"

He hesitated.

"Federal archives."

Evelyn immediately understood.

"What file?"

Marcus looked at her.

"Your mission file."

Her stomach tightened.

"Someone accessed it?"

"No."

"Then what?"

Marcus turned the phone around.

A notification was displayed.

MISSION STATUS UPDATED

Evelyn stared.

The words below made her blood run cold.

AGENT EVELYN CARTER – STATUS: ACTIVE

She stepped back.

"That's impossible."

Marcus looked at her.

"Your file says you never completed the mission."

"What?"

"It says you disappeared."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I returned."

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"According to the system..."

"You never came back."

Nobody spoke.

Because that meant only one thing.

Someone had changed official records.

Someone had erased Evelyn's survival.

Someone had made the world believe she was gone.

And they had done it before she even returned home.

Then another message appeared on Marcus's phone.

Unknown sender.

Everyone watched.

The message contained only one sentence.

"THE WOMAN YOU TRUSTED MOST DIDN'T DIE."

A second message appeared.

"SHE CAME HOME WITH YOU."

Evelyn froze.

Marcus looked at her.

"Who could that mean?"

She didn't answer.

Because suddenly every person in the room became a possibility.

Grant.

Vanessa.

The agents.

Everyone.

Then Lily's small voice came from the staircase.

"Mommy..."

Evelyn turned.

Her daughter was standing there.

Holding her stuffed rabbit.

Her face was terrified.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

Lily pointed toward the front door.

"I know who the woman was."

Everyone froze.

Evelyn walked toward her.

"Who?"

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"She came to my room."

"She kissed my forehead."

"She told me you weren't coming back."

Evelyn felt her heart stop.

"What did she look like?"

Lily whispered:

"She looked like..."

A pause.

"Grandma."

Nobody moved.

May you like

Because Evelyn's mother...

Had been dead for twelve years.
