Chapter 13 – The Secret Inside Evelyn

The words stayed with her.
You were the thing everyone was protecting the world from.
Evelyn stared at the blank screen.
No one spoke.
Not Marcus.
Not her mother.
Not even Grant.
Because everyone understood the same thing.
Thomas Carter had not just taken Lily.
He had attacked the foundation of Evelyn's entire identity.
Everything she believed about herself.
Everything she had built.
Everything she had sacrificed.
Was now a question.
Marcus finally broke the silence.
"Evelyn."
She didn't answer.
"Evelyn, look at me."
Slowly, she turned.
"What if he's right?"
The question surprised everyone.
Marcus shook his head.
"No."
"You don't know that."
"I know you."
Her eyes hardened.
"You knew the version of me I was allowed to be."
Marcus stepped closer.
"I know the woman who saved hundreds of people."
"I know the agent who risked her life for strangers."
"I know the mother who walked into a burning house for her daughter."
A pause.
"Whatever Thomas is trying to make you believe..."
"That's not who you are."
Evelyn looked away.
Because she wanted to believe him.
She needed to.
But there was one thing she couldn't ignore.
Her whole life had been controlled by secrets.
And every secret led back to her.
Three hours later, the team accessed the hidden files beneath the Carter estate.
Thousands of documents.
Medical records.
Psychological evaluations.
Childhood reports.
Evelyn stood in front of the screen, reading her own history.
She hated every word.
Subject demonstrated unusual pattern recognition at age five.
Subject displayed advanced memory retention.
Subject predicted behavioral outcomes with 94% accuracy.
She scrolled further.
Then stopped.
A file from when she was eight years old.
A recording.
Marcus looked at her.
"Do you want to play it?"
Evelyn hesitated.
Then nodded.
The video opened.
A younger Evelyn sat in a room.
Eight years old.
A puzzle in front of her.
Her father stood behind the camera.
"Why did you choose that answer?"
Young Evelyn shrugged.
"Because the other choices were wrong."
"How did you know?"
The little girl looked confused.
"Because people always show what they want."
Thomas's voice became interested.
"What does that mean?"
Young Evelyn pointed at the puzzle.
"They don't choose with their words."
"They choose with their actions."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
"She was observant."
Evelyn shook her head.
"No."
She looked at the screen.
"She was trained."
Another file opened.
This one was worse.
PROJECT OBJECTIVE: DEVELOP HUMAN PREDICTION CAPABILITY.
Evelyn stepped back.
"No."
Margaret whispered:
"Thomas believed the human mind could be engineered."
"And he used me."
Her mother looked down.
"Yes."
The honesty hurt.
But it was better than another lie.
Evelyn turned.
"What exactly did he do to me?"
Margaret hesitated.
"He tested you."
"How?"
"Games."
"Questions."
"Situations."
"Everything you thought was normal..."
Her voice broke.
"Was an evaluation."
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Memories returned.
Her father taking her hiking.
Her father teaching her chess.
Her father asking why she trusted certain people.
She thought he was teaching her.
He was studying her.
Then Grant spoke.
"I need to tell you something."
Everyone looked at him.
Evelyn's expression hardened.
"What now?"
Grant swallowed.
"There is another reason Blackridge chose me."
Marcus immediately became alert.
"What?"
Grant looked at Evelyn.
"They knew something about your DNA."
Silence.
Evelyn stared.
"My what?"
Grant looked ashamed.
"Before we married, they showed me your medical records."
Marcus frowned.
"Those records were classified."
"I know."
"How did they get them?"
Grant looked at Evelyn.
"Because your father gave them access."
Evelyn felt sick.
Her own father.
The man who claimed he was protecting humanity.
Had been selling pieces of her life.
Then Vanessa spoke.
"There is more."
Everyone looked at her.
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
"Thomas wasn't the only one studying Evelyn."
Marcus frowned.
"Who else?"
Vanessa hesitated.
"The government."
The room froze.
Evelyn stared.
"What?"
"The federal program you joined."
Marcus looked at her.
"Impossible."
Vanessa shook her head.
"It wasn't created to recruit people like Evelyn."
"It was created to monitor people like her."
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
"Is that true?"
He didn't answer immediately.
And that was enough.
Her heart sank.
"Marcus."
He looked away.
"Some parts of your file were restricted."
"Restricted from me?"
"Yes."
She laughed softly.
Another lie.
Another person who decided she couldn't handle the truth.
Then suddenly...
A message appeared on the main screen.
From Thomas.
Everyone turned.
The video started.
Thomas sat beside Lily.
She looked calm.
Too calm.
"Evelyn."
She stepped closer.
Thomas continued.
"I know you're angry."
"I know you think I stole your daughter."
A pause.
"But I saved her."
Evelyn clenched her fists.
"You kidnapped her."
Thomas shook his head.
"No."
He looked at Lily.
"I rescued her from a future you don't understand."
Evelyn's voice trembled.
"Bring her home."
Thomas smiled sadly.
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because they already know."
"Who?"
Thomas looked directly into the camera.
"The people who created the Carter Project."
A pause.
"The people who created you."
The screen changed.
A symbol appeared.
Not Blackridge.
Not The Order.
Something else.
Something older.
Marcus stared.
"What is that?"
Evelyn looked at the symbol.
And felt something strange.
Recognition.
Like she had seen it before.
Then Thomas spoke one final sentence.
"The truth is, Evelyn..."
"You were never my daughter."
The screen went black.
Nobody moved.
Then Lily's voice came from the recording.
Quiet.
Scared.
"Mommy..."
A pause.
"Please don't let them make me like you."
The message ended.
And Evelyn realized the worst part.
Thomas wasn't trying to destroy her.
May you like
He was trying to convince her...
That saving Lily meant stopping herself.
