Chapter 18 – The Man Behind the Carter Name
Nobody spoke.
Not even Thomas.
The man on the screen had been gone for decades.
A ghost.
A name buried in old records.
A person Evelyn had never known existed.
Yet Thomas Carter looked at him like he had just seen a nightmare return.
Evelyn slowly turned.
"Thomas."
Her father didn't answer.
"Who was that?"
Still nothing.
Her voice became sharper.
"I asked you a question."
Thomas looked at the screen.
Then quietly said:
"Your grandfather."
The room froze.
Evelyn stared.
"My grandfather?"
Thomas nodded.
"The man who started everything."
Marcus looked at the files.
"That doesn't make sense."
Thomas looked exhausted.
"Nothing about this family makes sense anymore."
The screen turned back on.
The older man appeared again.
His eyes were cold.
Calculating.
But there was something familiar.
The same way Evelyn looked at people.
The same way she studied every movement.
The same instinct.
The man smiled.
"Evelyn."
She stepped closer.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled.
"My name is Richard Carter."
A pause.
"And I am the reason you exist."
Evelyn felt anger rise.
"No."
Richard continued.
"Your father wanted to protect you."
"Your mother wanted to hide you."
"Helena wanted to control you."
A pause.
"But I..."
His smile widened.
"I wanted to complete you."
The screen displayed new files.
Thousands of them.
Every generation of the Carter family.
Richard.
Thomas.
Margaret.
Evelyn.
Lily.
Evelyn's eyes narrowed.
"What is this?"
"The truth."
Richard leaned closer.
"For generations, the Carter family has been studying one question."
"What question?"
"How far can the human mind evolve?"
Evelyn looked at Lily.
Richard followed her eyes.
"And then you were born."
The room became quiet.
"You weren't the final result."
Evelyn felt cold.
"Then what was I?"
Richard smiled.
"The bridge."
She didn't understand.
"The bridge between ordinary humans..."
A pause.
"And the next stage."
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"This is insane."
Richard looked amused.
"You still believe humanity evolves slowly?"
"Through chance?"
"Through nature?"
He shook his head.
"Evolution has always been guided."
Evelyn looked disgusted.
"You experimented on children."
"No."
Richard corrected.
"We protected potential."
"You destroyed lives."
"Some sacrifices are necessary."
Evelyn raised her weapon.
"That's what every monster says."
Richard smiled.
"Good."
A pause.
"You still have morality."
Helena watched silently.
Evelyn noticed.
"Helena."
The woman looked at her.
"You knew about him."
Helena didn't deny it.
"Yes."
"And you worked for him."
Another silence.
"Yes."
Evelyn felt betrayed again.
But this time...
She was tired of being surprised.
"Everyone has been using me."
Helena looked at her.
"Not everyone."
"Who hasn't?"
Helena looked toward Lily.
"Her."
Evelyn immediately moved closer to her daughter.
"Don't."
Helena stopped.
"I know what you think."
"What?"
"That Lily is the same as you."
A pause.
"But she's not."
Evelyn stared.
"Then what is she?"
Helena answered quietly:
"She's free."
That surprised Evelyn.
"Explain."
"Your mind was shaped by pain."
"By fear."
"By survival."
Helena looked at Lily.
"She developed naturally."
No experiments.
No conditioning.
No manipulation.
Just a child.
Evelyn looked at her daughter.
And suddenly understood.
Everyone saw Lily as a future.
A weapon.
A successor.
But nobody saw her as a person.
Nobody except Evelyn.
The facility suddenly shook.
The ceiling cracked.
Marcus looked up.
"Something's happening."
Richard's face appeared again.
"Phase Three has started."
Thomas looked alarmed.
"No."
Richard smiled.
"Yes."
"What did you activate?"
Richard looked directly at Evelyn.
"The truth."
The screens throughout the facility turned on.
Images appeared.
News channels.
Government systems.
Millions of devices.
A file was uploading.
Marcus looked horrified.
"He's releasing everything."
"What everything?"
Marcus stared at the screen.
"The Carter Project."
Evelyn's face changed.
"The world will know?"
"Yes."
Richard smiled.
"They will see what humanity is capable of."
Helena looked at him.
"And they will fear it."
Richard nodded.
"Exactly."
Evelyn understood.
This was never about controlling her.
It was bigger.
They wanted the world to panic.
To turn against anyone different.
To create chaos.
Richard continued:
"Evelyn, you have a choice."
She looked at the screen.
"What choice?"
"Join me."
Everyone went silent.
Richard continued.
"Together, you and Lily can guide humanity."
A pause.
"Or you can continue pretending you are ordinary."
Evelyn laughed.
A cold laugh.
"You still don't understand."
Richard frowned.
"What?"
Evelyn looked at Lily.
Then at every person who had tried to control her.
"My entire life..."
A pause.
"Everyone thought the most important thing about me was what I could do."
She held her daughter's hand.
"They were wrong."
Richard watched.
"The most important thing about me..."
She looked at Lily.
"Is what I choose."
For the first time...
Richard looked uncertain.
Then Lily spoke.
Quietly.
"Mommy."
Evelyn looked down.
"What?"
The little girl pointed toward the screen.
"That's not the real bad guy."
Everyone froze.
Evelyn knelt.
"What do you mean?"
Lily looked scared.
"I saw him before."
"Who?"
She pointed at Richard.
"He's afraid of someone."
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at the screen.
Thomas looked away.
Helena stopped breathing.
Evelyn whispered:
"Who?"
Lily answered:
"The person who tells him what to do."
A new message appeared on every screen.
Not from Richard.
Not from Helena.
Someone else.
Only four words.
"YOU FOUND THE BEGINNING."
Then another line appeared.
"NOW FIND THE END."
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time...
He looked afraid.
And Evelyn realized something terrifying.
