Chapter 7 – The Secret Lily Buried

The message stayed on the screen.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The words seemed to burn brighter with every passing second.
ASK YOUR DAUGHTER WHAT SHE SAW THAT NIGHT.
Evelyn stared at the monitor.
Then slowly looked toward the staircase.
Upstairs.
Behind that door.
Was the only person in the world she would destroy everything to protect.
Her daughter.
Marcus noticed the change in her expression.
"Evelyn."
She didn't answer.
Because suddenly every memory from the past six months came rushing back.
The short phone calls.
The nightmares Lily mentioned.
The way her daughter stopped asking when Mommy was coming home.
The way she apologized for things that were never her fault.
Someone had done more than hurt Lily.
Someone had taught her fear.
"Evelyn."
Marcus spoke again.
"You don't have to do this right now."
She looked at him.
"Yes."
A pause.
"I do."
She walked upstairs.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
Behind her, Grant followed.
"Evelyn."
She stopped.
But didn't turn around.
"What?"
"I need you to know something."
"Another secret?"
His face tightened.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"The night before you left for your mission..."
Evelyn waited.
"I almost told you."
She slowly turned.
"Told me what?"
"That Blackridge contacted me."
The room went silent.
"You almost told me?"
Grant nodded.
"But I didn't."
"Why?"
His eyes filled with regret.
"Because they sent me a picture."
Evelyn felt her stomach tighten.
"Of Lily?"
"No."
Grant swallowed.
"Of you."
A chill moved through her.
"They showed me pictures from inside your mission files."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Impossible."
Grant shook his head.
"That's what I thought."
"What did they want?"
Grant looked at Evelyn.
"They wanted me to make sure you accepted the assignment."
Evelyn froze.
"What?"
"They wanted you away from home."
The hallway became silent.
"So you helped them send me away."
Grant looked ashamed.
"Yes."
Evelyn stared.
"Even if you thought you were protecting Lily..."
Her voice became colder.
"You still chose them over me."
Grant had no answer.
Because there wasn't one.
Evelyn turned away.
She continued toward Lily's room.
The door was slightly open.
She pushed it gently.
Inside, Lily was sitting awake on the bed.
She had a stuffed rabbit in her arms.
The same rabbit Evelyn gave her before leaving.
"Mommy?"
Evelyn's heart broke.
She sat beside her.
"Hey, sweetheart."
Lily looked toward the doorway.
Then whispered:
"Is Daddy in trouble?"
Evelyn brushed her hair back.
"We're trying to understand what happened."
Lily looked down.
"Because of me?"
"No."
Evelyn immediately answered.
"Never because of you."
The little girl played with the rabbit's ear.
"Mommy..."
"Yes?"
"Are you mad at Daddy?"
Evelyn paused.
The question was too mature.
Too heavy.
"I'm trying to understand."
Lily nodded slowly.
Then whispered:
"I saw something."
Evelyn went still.
"What did you see?"
Lily looked scared.
"Before you left."
Evelyn gently held her hand.
"It's okay."
"No one is angry."
"No one will hurt you."
Lily took a shaky breath.
"Daddy was talking to a man."
"Where?"
"In the office."
"When?"
"The night before you left."
Evelyn exchanged a glance with Marcus.
"Can you describe him?"
Lily thought.
"He was tall."
"Was he old?"
"No."
"Young?"
"Maybe."
"What else?"
Lily closed her eyes.
Trying to remember.
"He had a silver watch."
Evelyn froze.
Marcus noticed.
"You recognize that?"
She nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"Who?"
Evelyn's face became pale.
"Someone from my team."
Everyone became silent.
"Who?"
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
"The person who was killed during my mission."
Marcus frowned.
"That's impossible."
"I know."
"You're saying a dead agent met with Grant?"
Evelyn looked back at Lily.
"That's what she's saying."
Lily suddenly grabbed Evelyn's sleeve.
"But Mommy..."
"What?"
"The man wasn't alone."
Evelyn leaned closer.
"Who was with him?"
Lily whispered:
"A woman."
Evelyn felt cold.
"What woman?"
Lily shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Did you see her face?"
"No."
"Why?"
The little girl pointed toward her closet.
"Because she told me not to look."
Everyone turned.
The closet.
Evelyn slowly stood.
She walked toward it.
Marcus immediately moved beside her.
"Wait."
Evelyn opened the door.
Nothing.
Just clothes.
Old toys.
A few boxes.
Then Marcus noticed something.
A small scratch near the wooden floor.
He knelt down.
"This wasn't here before."
He moved the rug.
Underneath was a tiny hidden compartment.
Inside...
A small black device.
A recording device.
Evelyn stared.
"How long has that been there?"
Marcus picked it up carefully.
"Long enough."
Grant stepped closer.
"What is it?"
Marcus looked at him.
"A reason to question everything you've told us."
The device was taken downstairs.
Minutes later, the team accessed the files.
Only one recording existed.
One audio file.
Created six months ago.
The night before Evelyn left.
Everyone gathered around the speaker.
Marcus pressed play.
Static.
Then voices.
Grant.
And another man.
"You understand the agreement?"
Grant's voice shook.
"Yes."
"You keep her away."
"Yes."
"And the child?"
A pause.
Then Grant said:
"Leave Lily out of this."
The unknown man laughed.
"That's not your decision."
Evelyn's face changed.
Then came another voice.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Familiar.
"Grant isn't the problem."
Everyone froze.
Because Evelyn recognized that voice.
She had heard it before.
Many times.
The recording continued.
"The real problem is Evelyn herself."
Marcus looked at her.
"Who is it?"
Evelyn didn't answer.
She couldn't.
Because the woman's next words revealed the truth.
"She still believes she is protecting the country."
A pause.
"But she has no idea..."
"Her own family was the operation."
The recording stopped.
Nobody spoke.
Then Evelyn slowly whispered:
"That voice..."
Marcus looked at her.
"Who is it?"
Evelyn stared at the device.
Her hands tightened.
"It's someone I trusted."
"Who?"
A long silence.
Then she said the name she never thought she would hear again.
"My former supervisor."
The room went cold.
Because her former supervisor...
Had been dead for six months.
And yet...
May you like
Someone had just heard her voice.
From inside Evelyn's home.
